A philosophical question about drafting a CB at #23, now...

Not any longer. Following the Peters trade I was an affirmative, now that Quinn is also gone, I believe CB2 must be a free agent. OLB has just moved ahead of CB for my vote with the first pick in the draft, whether at #23 or in a trade down. Ebukam may indeed be ready to take over at LOLB, but he'll need some solid depth joining him. ROLB needs a true starting replacement player for Quinn. Longacre is great depth when 100% healthy, although i'm not sure we can count on his even being ready for OTA's at this point. jmo.

Laker Thread

I'm ok with them letting Clarkson go to get cap space and the potential to sign IT longer term. Not to a max contract, but $16M/yr is very reasonable.

I'd like to see an eventual closing lineup this year of IT, Ball, Ingram, Randle/Kuzma, Randle/Zubac.

Next year we could potentially have a starting 5 of Ball, PG13, Ingram, Randle, Jordan or Cousins. Cousins will recover ok from Achilles due to relative youth.

McVay has company on flight to Indy

Indy is NOT a place that people really want to go to... it's a place that people are sometimes forced to go to though. There's not a bunch of choices for flights going there.

Well, I hardly expect him to be taking a first-class flight on Etihad or Singapore Air, but... Southwest?

I mean, I get it. I refuse to fly any other domestic carrier and if I ever get to go to Japan like I'm dreaming, I'm gonna do what I can to go Singapore Air in business class because that's way better than first class on United, American or Delta. And not by a little. It's CRAZY how bad domestic carriers are at providing service.

Just makes me love the guy that much more.

He's young and he's a regular joe. Oh and he's a fantastic HC.

Sam Bradford 'absolutely' plans to play in 2018

In all honesty, I kinda feel bad for him. Yeah, he made a shitload of money and all, but I bet he'd trade most of it for a healthy knee and the ability to play without worry of another injury for another 10 years. And he's a decent enough dude - likable - affable - team guy. Too bad he came through the league the way he did, but they don't let you pick your development. Just take what you get from the crappy team that was bad enough to draft you #1 overall and do what you can.

I wish him all the best. Just because he's a zillionaire doesn't mean I have to curb my compassion.

Sampologist.

Seriously, though. I was one of Sam's biggest defenders, too, and even with Philly and Minnesota, I wanted to see hime do well. His peak with the Rams may have been just before the play against Carolina where his knee was blown out. Sam was really starting to hit his stride and earn respect around the league.

I wish him well. I love comeback stories.

About that Franchise Tag thing...

Snead just said, at the Combine, that they don't have to worry about money for Donald being effected by Deals for Watkins and Joyner. He said the money for Donald is already set aside! In other words they can Tags Watkins or Joyner, or pay them whatever, and still be able to take care of Donald this year! At least that's the way I understood him!
Nice, hope that is true, but, who knows.
Don't know how the money would be "set aside" given the cap, but, maybe how it is structured?
Anyway, done over pay for Watkins and bring in D talent.

Tru Johnson Raiders top target?

Tru will be a FA . There is no way to franchise him. McVay said something along the lines as The Rams are set on offense.Need defense ?
It’s becoming that time of year.
My point would be if they don’t sign Brown or Big Rob ?
I think McVay really likes Higbee & Everett. He even stated that. McVay seemed to run more WR sets than double TE’s.

I sure do hope they sign Big Rob & Brown - I know in the past he's complimented Brown as a player and a person, lets hope something can be done about retaining our o-line - success starts right there.

Gotta admire how this FO and coaching staff nails personnel moves...

I’ve seen a whole lot of mocks and talk suggesting a lot of priorities.

For me I need Sullivan and OT depth as priority #1 after locking up AD.

This team could go to 8-8 really quickly if some injuries hit the Oline or we don’t address the center position.

Must build depth.

Then I tag Joyner and build my CB depth.

Everything else comes after that. Namely NT and LBers.

Bridgewater to hit FA

Opinion: Vikings clearing the deck of QBs to go after Cousins
Barry Petchesky

There’s an old, dumb, incorrect football saying that goes, “If you have two quarterbacks, you have none.” Well, the Vikings this season had three quarterbacks. And now, it appears, they actually do have none.

Free agency is two weeks away, and the deadline for placing franchise tags on players is one week away, and the Vikings have begun making decisions. NFL.com reported yesterday that Minnesota will not use the franchise tag on Case Keenum (who stepped in for the injured Sam Bradford, who took the place of the injured Teddy Bridgewater, who even when back to full health did not win the job back from Keenum, who led the team to the NFC title game. It was messy, but it worked somehow.) And now today, this:

This is more complicated than merely not re-signing Bridgewater. Because of his long-term injury, the Vikings could have made a case—it was certainly not cut-and-dried—that his contract should have tolled, which would roll it over a full year and have him essentially play for free in 2018.

Bridgewater would have filed a grievance, and if an arbitrator had ruled in favor of the Vikings, Bridgewater would have remained under team control for one more year, but with obvious bad blood. That wouldn’t have been a good situation for anyone. Instead, the Vikings are making it known that they won’t attempt to toll his contract, and allow him to hit free agency.

So, Keenum is a free agent after the journeyman turned in a magical season that no front office in its right mind would count on him repeating. Bridgewater, five years younger but with uncertain health prospects, is a free agent. They’re not going to re-sign Sam Bradford.

The Vikings could bring back Keenum, at a cheaper rate than the franchise tag (probably around $23.5 million), or Bridgewater, but neither is Plan A for a starter.

That’d be Kirk Cousins, who’s going to be the focus of a bidding war, with the Jets, Broncos, Browns, and Cardinals definitely in the mix, likely along with others. But the Vikings have more than enough cap space to make Cousins the highest paid player of all time, which he likely will be, and they have an excellent defense and some great receivers, which might make them the most attractive landing spot. It’s an open secret that the Vikings are going to make “a strong push” for Cousins, and there’s reportedly mutual interest.

If Cousins goes elsewhere, the Vikings could make a run at Drew Brees, even though he’s expected to end up back with New Orleans. And after that, the pickings get slim. Nick Foles in a trade? Josh McCown?

If it comes down to it, a reunion with Keenum or Bridgewater might be the stopgap solution as the Vikings grab a quarterback in a draft that’s pretty deep with them. But right now it looks like Cousins or bust. And if the defense plays like it did last year, that could end up the difference between a Super Bowl and a wasted season.

I find it really bizarre that the Vikings are happy to cut ties with Keenum - the dude balled for them last year and he had excellent chemistry with his WRs - sure he's not a headline grabber, but he could easily win a SB for them. I think they'll be sorry if this is true

ILBs

Darius Leonard, OLB (South Carolina State)

Leonard was a beast during his Bulldog career. In 2016, the outside linebacker earned MEAC Defensive Player of the Year honors with 124 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two interceptions and four forced fumbles. While he’s not the biggest linebacker at 6-2, 230 pounds, Leonard makes up for it with great speed and athleticism. His football instincts and nose for the ball should compliment any NFL team with a need for a defensive weapon.

and yeah, he's listed as an OLB....but I'm putting him inside...

This is why I put the cutups on these guys in this thread. When I watch Leonard's games I don't see instincts and nose for the ball. I see a safety type playing inside, a guy best suited for WILL in a 4-3.

But that's what makes this fun eh? :p
