Les Snead - Full of Surprises - Do you expect any this weekend?

Agree totally except that I won’t be disappointed. This draft seems full of decent talent that might go on day one in other years. I think we can fill most of our needs and have a couple players that could surprise.

Either way, I won’t be getting all amped up for any particular player mainly because we are starting so late. I’m going to assume that they have some players in mind that may not be on our radar.
I won't be either, this draft has some very good talent in the 3rd and 4th rounds and some dice worth rolling in the 6th and 7th. I think, once again, we'll get multiple starters in those middle rounds.

I dumped Verizon and have been very happy

You should check to see how the XFINITI wifi is for you at work. But at the 45 bucks for all you can eat maybe it's not a big deal.

My neighbor just purchased two iphones and is going to switch and his bill for both phones will 24 bucks a month on the pay as you use it plan. He said the same, he is always in range of wifi. It's crazy that he was paying about 150 bucks before. He owes me a bottle of vodka!!!

There are lots of XFINITY wi-fi around town and 1 down the street from my job. I am on and off the wifi depending on which end of the dock I'm on but mostly off I try to avoid the west end, too much wind. But I am thrilled with $45/month, even $45 each is cheaper than $125 for just the plan + whatever at&t charged for the 2nd line.

Kurt Warner as analyst on Monday Night Football?

Kurt Warner getting 'serious consideration' for 'Monday Night Football' job

There’s at least one Super Bowl-winning quarterback left in the running for the Monday Night Football analyst gig.

Kurt Warner has had multiple conversations with ESPN, and the Hall of Fame inductee remains among the narrowing list of candidates to replace Jon Gruden, a person with knowledge of the discussions told USA TODAY Sports. The person, granted anonymity because sensitive nature of talks, also said Warner is getting "serious consideration" for the job.

ESPN had already sought out Peyton Manning and Brett Favre as potential replacements for Gruden, who had called Monday night games for the previous nine seasons and left ESPN to take over as head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

Manning passed on the job and Favre, who per a New York Post report had a less-than-spectacular audition, said on Twitter this week that he was unsure he wanted to pursue broadcasting.

Steve Young, who serves as an analyst on the MNF pregame show, said earlier this year that he’s not interested, citing the time commitment required.

Warner has been an analyst on NFL Network since 2010. He played 12 seasons in the NFL, leading the Rams to victory in Super Bowl XXXIV. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last summer.

ESPN doesn’t appear to be in any rush to name a Gruden replacement or the one left open in the booth when it was announced play-by-play announcer Sean McDonough would go back to calling college games.

Another person familiar with the discussions told USA TODAY Sports that the list of candidates remains “long” and that it’s “too early to conclude” who the finalists are at this point.

Former New York Jets and Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan and former NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck are among the others ESPN has considered.
I like Kurt, but not as an announcer/Color Man! and the rest of the list so far seem pretty Boring! JMHO

Official 2018 Los Angeles Rams schedule

Love that schedule.

Rams have quietly become the face of the NFL, whether you like it or not.

I think you’re right...they sure do get a lot more press than I recall in a very long time. I wish we played patriocheats this year. I’d like see Tom try to handle our pass rush. Tom doesn’t like to get hit.

AD and Suh are going to hit a lot of QBs this year. Our defensive back field is going to get a lot of interceptions and big hits also. Go Rams!!! PS the Rams are no longer an N F L punchline

Rank’em; 2018 draft Quarterbacks

I think this is a smokescreen, at least if targeted as a QB.

#1 When does a rumor EVER leak out of New England?

#2 I think they are hoping someone else drops to them, that’s what this is about.

IMO

Patriots reportedly 'impressed and intrigued' with Lamar Jackson after top-30 visit

After trading both Jacoby Brissett and Jimmy Garoppolo last season, the New England Patriots no longer have in place a natural successor to Tom Brady at quarterback. But with the Pats having acquired a second first-round pick in this week's NFL Draft by trading Brandin Cooks to the Rams, rumors have been flying that they may be in the market for a passer on Day 1, in order to ensure they have a succession plan in place.

Well, let's just say those rumors are not going to quiet down after this report from NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. Rapoport notes that the Pats quietly had a top-30 visit with Louisville's Lamar Jackson two weeks ago, and that the organization came away "impressed and intrigued" by Jackson.

Jackson doesn't necessarily fit the mold of the quarterbacks the Patriots have selected in past years, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't be the right fit for them. Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels are always trying to stay a step ahead of the latest offensive and defensive developments, and it's entirely possible they've identified Jackson's skill set (intermediate-to-deep passing/designed runs/mobility) as being what they need to build their post-Brady offense around.

There are few destinations that would be more intriguing for Jackson, considering the creativity with which the Patriots have built their offense over the years. Getting to learn from Brady wouldn't be a bad thing for his development, either.

The operative question here is whether the Patriots could snag Jackson by staying put at picks No. 23 and 31, or whether they would need to move up in the draft in order to get him. Bill Belichick has been loath to trade up in the past, doing so only a scant few times. One of those times worked out pretty well, as the Pats jumped up the board to select Rob Gronkowski. If the Pats view Jackson -- or anyone else, really -- as a similarly transformative or impactful player, it wouldn't be the biggest shock to see them break tendency once again.

Could be a smoke screen but, with the extra picks they could pull the trigger on Jackson. First they need a backup. I always like backups that can run. It would be totally interesting to see Jackson go to the Pats for the easiest job in pro football.

Draft Day Trades

2018 Los Angeles Rams Draft: Snead be Slanging

The Rams GM has built a legendary reputation to trade any and everything.

Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

We’ve hit the month of April which means the NFL Draft is inching closer for the Los Angeles Rams and the rest of the league. Mock Drafts are everywhere and everybody fancies themselves as top talent evaluators and Madden Franchise owners. One man who treats the draft, and most recently his actual roster, sort of like a video game is Rams GM Les Snead.

As MMQB’s Peter King puts it, “Snead has never met a trade he didn’t like”. Since 2018 Snead has found himself trading players more than ever but he originally earned his gunslinging ways with draft picks. If you’ve ever wondered just how much, or even how, Snead trades picks during (or weeks before) the actual draft, I’ve got you covered in preparation for the 2018 NFL Draft, Snead’s 7th as GM.

First let me acknowledge that the amount of times Snead and the Rams have executed some sort of trade since 2012 is a little overwhelming to keep track of. So I’m focused on the instances that involve a draft pick for draft pick. Specifically, the instances where Snead and the Rams (no one has the smoking gun on who did what prior to 2017) maneuvered up or down in the draft from their draft slot.

For the sake of clarity, I’m not going to count picks acquired for other year’s drafts (ex. the RG3 trade’s bounty) or include the entire trade details. Since 2012 the Rams have moved up or down a total of 13 times. Listed with the Rams’ original pick first to where they actually picked, here we go:

2012
  • 2nd to 6th overall
  • 6th to 14th
  • 45th to 50th
Otherwise known as the RG3 trade, the Rams moved down from 2nd overall before the 2012 draft even began to collect a bounty of picks. Once the clock started ticking, the Rams then moved down once more from 6th overall after a trade with Dallas that gave them DT Michael Brockers at pick 14. In the 2nd round, the Rams swapped picks with Chicago and moved down a 3rd time to pick 50, resulting in RB Isaiah Pead.

2013
  • 16th to 8th overall
  • 22nd to 30th
  • 184th to 160th
2013 saw three more draft day trades led off by a trade with Buffalo to move up for WR Tavon Austin. Later in the 1st round the Rams moved down with Atlanta to then select LB Alec Ogletree. Finally, the Rams made another jump up to get back into the 5th round for RB Zac Stacy.

2014
  • 44th to 41st overall
Only one trade this year. The Rams moved up three spots to get ahead of Tennessee for S Lamarcus Joyner when they traded with Buffalo once again.

2015
  • 41st to 57th overall
Two years in a row and Snead makes just one trade. He’s losing his touch. The Rams biggest trade down to date, they traded places with Carolina and then selected T Rob Havenstein with the 57th pick.

2016
  • 15th to 1st overall
  • 113th to 117th
This one was the shocker. Weeks ahead of the draft, Fisher and Snead made a huge jump up to Tennessee’s 1st overall pick in order to select QB Jared Goff. Looks a lot better now with someone out of the picture. Strapped for picks, the Rams later made a small trade back in the 4th with Chicago and then selected WR Pharoh Cooper.

2017
  • 37th to 44th overall
  • 112th to 117th
  • 141st to 125th
The Rams yet again found a trade partner in Buffalo and traded back in the 2nd round to eventually take TE Gerald Everett. And in an almost identical scenario to 2016, Snead traded with Chicago to move down to 117 in the 4th round and take WR Josh Reynolds. Finally, the Rams stayed busy in the 4th by moving up to select LB Samson Ebukam after a trade with the New York Jets.

So there you have it.

Snead and the Rams have been more apt to trade down (8) than trade up (5). The 1st and 2nd round seems to be Snead’s hot zones, as evidenced by four 1st and four 2nd round trades, but the Rams are without a 2nd round pick in 2018. And while there has been 13 total trades, it’s only resulted in 12 picked players in those same years. Of those 12 players, only four play defense (Brockers, Ogletree, Joyner, and Ebukam), all of which have had or are expected to have major impact roles.

If you’re a believer in historical trends, then the odds would favor a trade down at some point for an offensive player but this is a much different team and set of circumstances. The Rams roster is in the best shape its ever been since the GSOT days so the team might not be so inclined to trade down to acquire more draft capital to try and form an actual NFL Offense (shout out to Jeff Fisher’s dog).

There’s been some sort of move in every draft since 2012 and there’s no reason to think that will change this year. Finally supported by a strong roster, that he unquestionably built, Snead won’t find himself pressured and on the ropes this year like in year’s past. And that should make for one of the most exciting NFL Drafts for Rams fans since the draft was all we had to look forward to.

Nice job reminding us of the all the past Snead moves. End result mixed results. Goff the home run, Brokers, Joyner good picks Tavon, Pead not so good.

When you watch all the draft shows and read all the draft literature you think everyone is going to be a home run, but it is never the case. Crazy how that happens when you have scouts spending so much time watching games and reviewing tape.

Honestly I like this year's mantra get proven players. The risk is minimalized and basically you are trading a pick for more certainty ie first for Cooks a second for Peters (plus a little extra compensation). To me that is worth it. Zero learning curve, we know what the player will do on and off the field. Essentially you take the guess work out of the pick.

With Todd Gurley in peak form, Rams will likely pass on running backs in the draft

I think getting a Chris Thompson like back is higher on the Rams to do list then many people think. They tried to get that guy last year in Lance Dunbar, but he could never get healthy. Ito Smith and Akrum Wadley are two names to keep an eye out on since they met with the Rams at the Senior Bowl and came in for top 30 visits.

Fantastic schedule. So, what’s your favorite matchup?

It's got to be week 1, against the Raiders. This game will be the measuring stick for the rest of the season, lose it and we could be in for a tough ride. The reasons being are four-fold:

1. If we lose, the media hype surrounding the Rams will implode, and it will be a 'told you so' moment, 'should have built through the draft', 'last year was a fluke' '8-8 bullcrap here we come' 'the 49ers are the team to beat in the NFC' etc.

2. I want to see McVay out-coach Gruden. We saw a few times last year McVay get out-coached (Wash, Minni, Philly IMO) and do bad choices, I want to see his development as a coach week 1.

3. I want to see our D. Not because of the new additions, but I want to see that we've improved our early 'laziness' against the run. I want to see the D out there firing on all cylinders.

4. I want to see Greg the Leg back taking the PATs, with no side effects from his operation.

The Marijuana Question

What's funny is that you say follow the money, but others say the industry is about to make a ton of money turning cannabis into medicine. Shouldn't the same companies who have a hand on the game right now be trying to get into a product in their industry that's about to explode?

Unfortunately, there isn't the money to be made by developing a proprietary version that takes advantage of the benefits of cannabis. There are things like Marinol, which has shown significant benefits for nausea for chemo patients (and has also shown pain benefits, though it is not officially approved for it.) However, its primary advantage is that it is legal but expensive and tightly controlled. Good for states without medical marijuana, and good for patients travelling. However, marijuana is a fraction of the cost, and few within the target market are actually better off with Marinol instead of marijuana. Pharmaceutical companies make more money by having marijuana be illegal and tightly controlled, rather than there being sanctioned studies of its benefits.

Certainly, there are more benefits claimed than the science that is allowed warrants. Some people claim that it is a panacea for cancer, and studies outside of the US do not show that. However, epidemiologic studies in states with medical marijuana show a major reduction in opioid prescriptions, and its value in nausea reduction and appetite increase - both of which are major issues in cancer patients. But the money isn't there for Big Pharma, especially with the decrease in opioids.

Ok - advice on best seats for the home opener

Thanks @rdlkgliders

I read somewhere that there is construction in the upper levels of the stadium on the Rams side for the 2018 season. Has anyone heard about this?
Yes! that is why I changed seats my season seats were affected by the remodel everything above row 40 is gone. It will be much more of a challenge to get good seats this season.

Strength of Schedule

SOS carries about as much weight in my book as the Power Rankings. Zero...... They are worth nothing at the beginning of the year. And the fact that they are in the "tie Breakers" for playoffs is pathetic.

The modified SoS that I'm compiling will mean more insofar as it reflects the relative strength of a team at the time of kickoff.

I'll also see about creating a running 4 week window for a bit of a "flash" capture of how teams are playing at that time. Like, they may be 8-4, but if they'd lost their last 3 in a row, that'd let people know that teams have either figured things out or maybe suffering from breakdowns or injuries.
