How Jared Goff's game shares Aaron Rodgers' traits

Don't see similarities with Goff and Rodgers other than playing in Cal. Goff has similarities with P. Manning in terms of his ability to move his feet inside the pocket to leverage movement away from getting sacked. Hoping he can evolve with the cerebral aspect of that too.

Yep. You gotta stick with the pocket types for Goff comparisons...

Payton's a good one, Jared's probably not as cerebral as he was (who is) but might get close eventually under McVay's tutelage, and Jared's got a way better arm. Goff's college tape with his "hot feet" is definitely reminiscent, but he's probably a bit better than Payton was in pocket movement. Payton's deal was using his megamind to unload that thing quickly when protections broke down.

Goff is closer to Brady as far as a more classical release which uses a back foot anchor and a more vertical, quick release.

Agreed. Brady's also a guy who IMO is an example of determination making him great, he's got similar accuracy with Jared as well as his efficient pocket movement. Him going round 6 had a lot to do with physical ability (arm strength) but you can't measure heart. You also can't discount the impact of having a great coach and team around you year in and year out. I really think Brady's the best comparison for Jared, and I also think Jared has a stronger arm than the "Pistachio Ice Cream" spokesman.

Los Angeles Rams Remain First in HCR’s Game Control Index

The Game Control Index tracks how often a team comes away with points via long drives (starting at their own 30-yard line or deeper) and short drives (starting at the 50 or in opponent’s territory). We do the same for each team’s defense, i.e., how well does a team prevent long drives and short drives. We calculate total points scored on these drives and average points per drive – for both offense and defense. “Throwaway drives” – if a team is kneeling at the end of a half or just running out the clock – are not counted.

That’s eight different factors to rank, and the average of the eight factors produces the Game Control Index. The lower the number, the better that team did in converting opportunities to control games.

What are the eight different factors they count?

What would be the index numbers if they counted all the drives?

Do they factor in who they are playing?

The whole site is dedicated to ranking head coaches and the GCI. McVay is tied with Reid at #1 with 8.3 while McCarthy is at 6.9 tie with 5 others at #16.

Seems like there are other ways to rank teams. Could help rank teams early in the year because the win and loss totals aren't true indicators.

Site Maintenance

To all -

We have a series of patches going through over the next 2 weeks (on Friday nights). First one went through last night.

These are mandatory and we do not anticipate any interruptions... however we may bump into a thing or two and we ask for your patience.

The next one is Friday Nov-2, then again on the 9th.

This is common and part of every day maintenance to keep us running at our best.

Thank you!

local radio media coverage

Don't mind that the sports dudes spend time on WS. I am a big Dodger fan and the the WS is still a popular sporting event. Today, the sports hosts on the mighty 1090 a sports station out of San Diego spent more time on the Rams than any other local team. And John Ireland spends a lot of time talking Ram football; he attends all games and spends his own money on his season seats. Taking into account that he is the radio play-by-play announcer for the Lakers, I think that's cool. He loves the Lakers, Dodgers and Rams all equally. Radio 830 out in Anaheim also spends a lot of time talking Ram football. The one guy I really don't like is Stephen A Smith. Oh, he talks football but he is an NBA dude and spends almost his entire show talking basketall--especially Golden State and Steph Curry. I mean who cares in October?
Max Mucy just hit a walk-off HR in the 18th inning to beat the Red Sox 3-2! What a game!! A World Series game for the ages! And it's 3:30 Saturday morn in beantown!!

FanDuel Superbowl Odds as of week 8

As we near the halfway point of the NFL season, the true contenders have finally managed to distance themselves from the rest of the pack. Todd Gurley, Jared Goff and the Los Angeles Rams are the only undefeated team left. Tom Brady and the Patriots are still the Patriots. The Chiefs have an unstoppable offense with MVP-candidate Pat Mahomes and the Saints have looked great after losing in Week 1.

So with those four teams clearly in the lead, how have the oddsmakers decided to rate those teams and the other potential contenders heading into Week 8?

Rams +300
Patriots +380
Chiefs +600
Saints +850
Vikings +1200
Chargers +1800
Ravens +2000
Panthers +2600
Texans +2600
Steelers +2600
Packers +2900
Eagles +2900
Bears +3600
Bengals +3600
Redskins +3600
Cowboys +5000
Jaguars +5000

Officials/Refs (Any Accountability?)

I'd have my media types post up a lowlight clip of the most egregious holds that weren't called on the game's best defensive player.

I still LOL at the possibility of them putting a clip together and playing it pre-game on the big screen.

I swear if I owned the Rams I'd do it and worry about the consequences/fine/suspension later.

It would be an historically epic burn that would be talked about for eternity.

Tell ya what I was wrong about Ndamukong Suh

I wasn't as hype as everyone else when he was signed. I thought he was an icehole...and not the good kind of icehole, just one of those that did what he wanted and didn't care if hurt someone.

Me too. Never liked the dude for those reasons you mention. Didn't want him signed. But I am glad we have him right now.

I just hope the run defense continues to improve as the season goes on. That is going to be a big part of how his addition this year is graded down the road IMO. We know he can rush the passer, but this defense still needs to demonstrate it can stuff the run week in and out vs a determined and talented opponent.

Article/Op-Ed: The push back against flawed CTE research has begun

Is the Scientific Approach different from the Scientific Method? (Sorry this is already starting out argumentative and petty; please bear with me). I was under the impression that the scientific method meant making an assumption, then testing the assumption in an experiment that included a control group to ensure that the things have something to be compared to. Maybe the Scientific Approach is a little more lax. I understand that you can't do an experiment with head trauma, but studying things like brains under the conditions of the assumption is a close analogue. Therefore it's easy to assume that they should have things that weren't just the things they were looking for.

And I'm not necessarily dismissing the process, although I'm semi ok with you calling this backtracking. I thought the article made some good points and kind of just bought into the whole thing. Bad move on my part. Establishing a contextless (no control group, no non-football brains in this particular study) may have some value, but not nearly enough to start the panic that it did. But they did start a panic.

Did they try to eliminate any brains with multiple factors so that they can clearly establish that football brains with CTE symptoms are really at 90%? Did they try to look for people with as many factors as possible to ensure that they got football brains with CTE to prove their point and it turned out better than expected? I don't know, but it's sounds like they didn't based on the breakdown of their study in that article. How could you say that football brains with CTE symptoms have a 99% correlation if maybe 50% of this brains were also in boxing clubs as children, or were in multiple car crashes, or some other factor which is believed to contribute. You were a network admin, you know you only make one change at a time, evaluate one factor at a time. We've no clue if they did that...I think.

I meant that those behind were assumed to have CTE because they had CTE. They went out selecting the people they were looking for and found them. Not a surprise.

Just like your better example, without something to compare it to, you can't draw conclusions from it. I don't believe that it was clearly defined within that study what a normal ratio of selected brains to those with CTE was. I don't remember hearing it. We assume that the ratio for normal brains wild be 0, but without actually comparing the football brains to normal brains it's mean-... Umm, well you said it's not meaningless. What do you call data with no context and no way to interpret it that didn't tell you causation so you can't actually do anything with it except another study that basically does the same thing you did but with relevant data and meaningful conclusions?

I think I just covered this. I forgot why I quoted it. I understand the importance of context. Maybe more than some other people. I'll DM you about why. You'll understand.

Not typing all that great atm. Just some really bad fatigue.

I’ll try to address this stuff soon.

A small thing is to say that the science is good and I’ll provide some better examples as to why this is any why both the group and the choices are appropriate.

Hopefully tomorrow

Interesting fact about Rams/Packers game

I never knew that Bart Starr was a coach of theirs once.Interesting. Great to see this long time matchup back in the LA coliseum again one more time.:football:

Sunday will mark the first time in 40 years the Green Bay Packers have played against the Rams at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, one of the nation's more hallowed sporting venues. The Packers last met the LA Rams there in 1978, two years before the franchise relocated to Anaheim Stadium and then to St. Louis from 1995-2015.
