Well, it’s been half a day since the final gun...

There is a massive difference between spin and context.

I was providing context. At no point did I assert that the Rams shouldn't be working hard on improving their defense.

Spin would have been either trying to assert that the Rams D is a top D, (it's not, at least without Talib) or making excuses for their poor play.

I am one who respects legit opponents and understand that sometimes an opponent scores or we don't score because the opponent won their assignments in an affirmative action, not that our guys failed. That negates the possibility of defeating a well executed play which we see happen often... just watch Aaron Donald!

We've played since week 3 when Talib went out, 6 of 8 teams capable of making the playoffs. That's context.

Unless you or anyone can make a legitimate case that anything short of an undefeated season for the Rams amounts to a failure on their part.

If you look at each game in context, we've seen plays made against us that are otherworldly...and we still win. So defeating very talented teams who are actually making tremendous plays is a testament to how good this team is as a whole team.

Of course the D can be better, but as constructed, we're missing the 2nd most critical defender and we haven't built the depth necessary to allow for this.

That's context, unless one can make the case that injuries shouldn't matter and it's all just helmets and "scoreboard".

First, let me say that you’re one of my favorite posters, Mackeyser. I make it a point to never miss a post of yours.

And all of the points you’ve made are valid, as far as they go.

But the Rams D has been a sieve for the last 4 games, in particular. That’s just a fact, and one must confront it.

One can rationalize or make excuses as to why until the cows come home, but the fact remains that Wade must get a handle on this and pdq.

Otherwise, a team like the Saints will ravage us in the playoffs. Just as they already did in Week 10.

To be fair, there are some hints of improvement with Fowler and Ebu, plus Talib’s return has gotta be a big boost. Let’s hope that Wade has, or gets a handle on this after our bye.

Good discussion, man.

NFL Head Coaching Candidates For 2019

Caveat emptor with Josh McDaniels I think nobody would approach him, let him burn in effigy replacing Belichick in New England.

Will be tough to sell Dennis Allen with a 8-28 record, but then again the Giants hired Pat Shurmur with a 10-23 record.

I do believe this will be the year of the college head coaches, with the RPO type of offense teams are going to be looking for that type of Head Coach. Also guys who have NFL ties like Matt Rhule will be on short lists and I have a feeling if the Ravens move on from John Harbaugh, Rhule is their type of hire.

I can't wait for him to do to NE what he did to the Broncos.

The Schadenfreude will be massive.

Super Bowl Teams That Played Each Other During Regular Season

It's happened 13 times and the loser has come back to win 8. Tough to beat a team twice as the Rams lost to the Titans in 1999 to defeat them in the Super Bowl and they beat the Patriots during the 2001 season only to lose in the Super Bowl. The last four times though, the losing team in the Regular season has won.

2011 Giants - Patriots

2007 Giants - Patriots

2001 Patriots - Rams

1999 Rams - Titans

1994 49ers - Chargers

1993 Cowboys - Bills

1990 Giants - Bills

1986 Giants - Broncos

1985 Bears - Patriots

1983 Raiders - Redskins

1981 49ers - Bengals

1980 Raiders - Eagles

1977 Cowboys - Broncos

And the Regular Season Results:

1980 Eagles won 10-7

1983 Redskins won 37-35

1990 Bills won 17-13

1993 Bills won 13-10

1999 Titans won 24-21

2001 Rams won 24-17

2007 Patriots won 38-35

2011 Patriots won 24-20
Yes, but no dread of statistics past. The Rams will be better against both the Chiefs and the Saints if they play again.

Sean McVay explains late game aggressive play calling

You're open to your opinion man, but those percentages don't take into account how horrible the Ram's defense has been. And I don't doubt our team, I just doubt our defense. If you're comfortable with our defense heading into the Lions game then all the power to you. Our secondary has been playing horrible and we were facing a HOF, all time clutch QB that only needed a FG to win.

You can get defensive over the Packers comment but the core focus here is our late game play calling and execution. Our inability to sustain 4-min drives for a month straight to close out games has to be concerning. McVay is a wizard so hard to question his play calling, but either our players need to execute better or he needs to tweak something late.
But Rodgers isn't all time clutch, at least not by the standard of 4th quarter comebacks.

And no I'm not happy with our defense. But I know what they're capable of, so I know that any given series they could dominate to such an extent that no QB or team has a chance at all. I mean, if 3 plays in a row Donald, Brockers, Suh, Littleton, Barron, Peters, Joyner, and Johnson all played up to their potential, no one could do a damn thing against them. That just hadn't been happening this season... At all. Ever. Maybe against the Chiefs a couple times, but that's still debatable. Never 3 in a row. But I always know that if they do, it's a wrap.

And yeah, on a few plays offensive execution has been lacking. Those are also clutch plays for the defense too. Given our success rate, you can't ask more. If they made those couch plays, they'd be perfect. I can't expect them to be perfect. So they're close enough, even if it does suck sometimes that they can't put teams away like I want.

Looks Like Fish Might Be Roaming the Coliseum

I think Petersen is a good candidate for the NFL.

I'd be shocked, strikes me as a college guy, but Brian Kelly Notre Dame will be in the NFL in 2019 IMO...Been at Notre Dame 9 years and this would be the perfect year to move on...Not sure where, but I'm thinking Kelly Green is a good color so the New York Jets could be his landing spot.

Rams at Detroit - December 2nd

I used to go to Detroit, or as it is pronounced in French since it was founded by the French.......Daytwah, often on business. Now this was many years ago.

Once I was taken to a place in a suburb, Livonia is the name of it, to a bar called Mason's. I just googled it and it's still there.

Now I traveled a lot. A LOT, as in about 20 weeks a year.

My favorite "cheat foods" are burgers, wings and pizza and I love sushi too. I knew where the very best burgers, wings (been to both places that claim to have originated them in Buffalo), pizza and sushi in all the places I traveled to since I was in many of the cities multiple times a year.

Right now I could only tell you a few of the places I earmarked, and there were loads of them back then, it's been so many years and I traveled all over that city as well as all over Pennsylvania, Ohio, Western/Upstate New York, Toronto and Montreal. So many places.

Mason's is one I easily remember, I won't forget that place haha. The burgers are that good, or at least they were. And the chili is nothing to complain about either.

It's not a fancy place but as we all know sometimes the neighborhood bars are the best. Sometimes a great burger and an icy draft beer are wonderful.

I know our brothers across the pond just gritted their teeth at "icy draft" but thats OK.

Did Gurley hurt his back? Ankle - Per McVay

Bye week comes at perfect time for Rams so Todd Gurley can rest ankle
by Dan Parzych
https://ramblinfan.com/2018/11/21/los-angeles-rams-todd-gurley-bye-week-perfect-timing/

With the news emerging that Todd Gurley was dealing with an ankle injury on Monday, thank goodness the Los Angeles Rams are on a bye week.

A few days later, Los Angeles Rams fans are still feeling the excitement from Monday’s win over the Kansas City Chiefs since the only way to top a performance like that will have to take place in Atlanta during February when the Super Bowl takes place.

However, the Rams know they still have a lot of work on their plate when it comes to their final five games since they would technically lose the tiebreaker to the New Orleans Saints for the No. 1 seed from their loss a few weeks ago.

Most importantly, Los Angeles hopes to take advantage of their bye week before a Week 12 showdown with the Detroit Lions by seeing some of their key players earn some much-needed rest, one of which happens to be Todd Gurley.
When looking at how the Rams were able to put up 54 points in their win over the Chiefs, one would assume that some of those touchdowns came from the Pro Bowl running back.

However, Gurley’s impressive touchdown streak of 13 games officially came to an end after he was limited to just 55 rushing yards on 12 carries. And while there was previously some frustration over the lack of touches Gurley was seeing early on in the game, it made more sense when hearing the news shortly after that he was dealing with an ankle injury.

After hearing this, it’s easy to understand why Sean McVay was taking a cautious approach with his beloved running back since the Rams coach needs to do what’s best for the long run. Los Angeles may be one of the favorites to make a run at the Super Bowl right now, but keeping Gurley healthy is always going to be a top priority to put them in a better position of living up to expectations.

Luckily for the Rams, Gurley was able to play through the injury to help his teammates take down the Chiefs. Not to mention, with the extra time off, there’s every reason to believe Gurley will be back at full strength for the team’s next game against the Lions.

Nobody needs to explain just how valuable Gurley is to this Los Angeles team, and when the time comes in a few months, there’s a good chance he’ll be in the conversation for the MVP award once again, although Patrick Mahomes II is making a pretty strong case.

Still, as great as it would be to see Gurley take home the honors after falling just shy last year, the Rams running back knows winning the Super Bowl would be even more meaningful. Staying healthy will be key to making that dream become a reality for Los Angeles, but thank goodness the team is in a position with the bye week where he can take advantage of the extra recovery time.

Unsung hero JHekker

I love him too, but look how long it took Ray Guy to get in the HOF. Guy was a Hekker of the 70’s, if you didn’t know, young whippersnapper! :fighting:

I mean he’s a punter, of course it would take awhile. His best shot would be one of the legends picks or whatever it’s called where they have to add 2 older players. But it doesn’t change the fact that it should happen

McVay needs an intervention

I said you need to run the ball and force the opposing team to use all their time outs. My exact phrase was "Gurley or Brown could've also ran for a first down. But reality is you have to force the Chiefs to burn all three of their time outs there..." I can link my post for you if you'd like. You and your straw man argument somehow twisted that into three straight kneels and a punt. Excuse me but those two scenarios are nothing at all alike.
What's a straw man? You are stating that the goal is for KC to burn their timeouts. Maybe you should read what you wrote again.
Gurley or Brown "could have" run for a 1st down? Aren't you the guy who criticized for hypothetical reasoning??
McVay was all over getting a 1st down and had they been dominating in the run game, (which they clearly weren't) I'd imagine that would have been his route.
So your goal was to burn timeouts and McVay's was to get 1st downs.
I like his approach better, good thing he's coaching the team

EDIT- against Seattle they had ran for almost 150 yards, Green Bay almost 140. Against KC? They had kept Gurley and Brown to 70.

Peter King: 11/19/18

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/11/20/not-everyone-is-thankful-for-higher-scoring-games/

Tuesday’s PFT Live simulcast began with Peter King providing his big takeaway from Monday night’s epic game between the Chiefs and Rams: “Football has changed.”

Indeed it has. Fueled by fairly recent rules that promote safety by protecting quarterbacks and defenseless receivers and decades of efforts to pump up the offense, points are being scored like never before. So the question becomes whether there’s too much scoring.

There isn’t. And there won’t be unless and until the NFL becomes like the NBA or the Arena Football League, with a presumption that each drive will end in points.

Even during last night’s dizzying array of 14 touchdowns, it never felt like either team was presumed to score, with a defensive stop becoming something that was unlikely and unexpected. Indeed, three of the touchdowns came via plays that resulted in six points for the defense.

While Peter seemed to be on the fence regarding whether changes are needed, he suggested that the Competition Committee should take up the question of whether something needs to be done to restore a better balance between offense and defense. He mentioned that Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts, one of the first men to benefit from the initial wave of pro-offense rules in the ’70s, recently suggested that perhaps the defense should be given a 12th man.

That’s unlikely, for a variety of reasons. Most importantly, the owners — not the Competition Committee — ultimately determine the rules. And the owners see a bright-line connection from more points and higher ratings and more money.

Higher-scoring games not only attract more viewers but also hold more viewers, with folks less likely to stray to the hundreds of other things that can occupy our time at any given moment. Exciting games between teams with great offenses likewise make fans want the experience to last as long as possible, sparking few complaints when the total time of the game strays beyond three hours and 40 minutes.

Fans want games like that to last even longer. And while some may huff and puff about go-go games with pinball numbers, no one will blow the NFL’s house down over what was witnessed on Monday night. The more games like that, especially in prime time, the better off the NFL will be.

Goff Showed Me Something Special Tonight

And this is on a night when his accuracy was off. He threw a few into the ground and over threw a few to wide open guys. But when he needed to he new he could do it and he did.
I have gotten to a point where I expect to see amazing accuracy from Goff. When I saw him throw 3-4 bad balls I thought the Rams were going to be in a tough spot and something was a little off by Goff this night. Man - did he fool me - as he came alive when needed and was actually close to a couple more TDs (Cooks drop, Reynolds oob). He is not only very talented - he has ice in his veins which is amazing to see from such a young QB. As Rams fans - we are truly blessed to have Goff as our QB!!
