CAMP REPORT 2019 NFL Draft Round 2-3 (no spoilers!)

Don’t care what anyone says... the guy looks lost running around. He runs around like one of those 8 year old girls playing soccer...

Basically, his footwork is total crap, but if Kromer can fix that, he’s got other skills to be really good inside.

NO WAY does he have the feet to play outside in the NFL.

Noteboom looks like Fred Astaire compared to Bobby Evans.

I like him inside. I like him after a year of working on his footwork.

If he’s supposed to be the Whitworth replacement...I don’t like the pick...at all.

Yeah, I don't see that at all.
From what I've seen of him (highlight reel, some Orange Bowl video, and other video), he looks like a real solid player.
He looks to be pretty good on his feet, gets to the next level, has really good vision, and seals off blocks.
The only real bad tendency might be when a pass rusher attempts to go around him deep...he tends to not stick with him. I think a lot of guys do the same thing - but that's the one thing I saw.
I also didn't see too many running plays, so I'm not sure what he's like as a run blocker. He does seem to position himself well. So if he's not a "mauler", at least he gets in position.

I like the pick.

Trades Trades Trades - Snead gets creative

Must be Stockholm Syndrome. He's thinking back to the Jeff Fisher days and thinking he has to collect 8 low round players to try and find a starter.

That trade-back in the 2nd round was...man, I was clearly in the camp against trading out of the 1st round, but trading out of that 2nd round pick with Greedy AND McCoy still on the board...good god. The Rapp pick was confusing, too. He's the kind of guy who tackles really solidly...because he has to, because he lets the receiver get the ball first.

you make it sound like the rams don't know what they're doing. they work out who they can and can't get, come up with a plan of which players they like best with the capital they have and then snead trades down and up to areas he thinks he can get his/mcvay's guys. obviously they were targeting rapp, henderson and long plus evans from the get go. they prefer those players than taking a guy at #31 and whatever two players are there late in the 3rd.

remember he kept trading down until he had enough ammunition to trade back up in the 3rd. so we know henderson was always the target.

.

2019 NFL Draft "Top 15" Positional Rankings

The Top 15 positional players I used in this post were based on a consensus from several draft sites I visited.

The Rams stayed true to their value board and I commend Snead's staff and McVay for their selections.

They ended up getting 4 players that were far from reaches based on their rankings.

The players chosen may not have been from the position groups that many Rams fans were targeting but on paper all of these picks were worthy of their selection.

Great job Snead & co.... :yess:

Day two recap

Big day! Started out with a few picks. Traded a bunch of times and got a few different picks :D

Taylor Rapp S Washington

Looks to be the eventual successor to Weddle and in the mean time will likely be the 3rd safety in those sets that Wade loves to put 3 out on the field. Can't help but feel this guy immediately upgrades our secondary.

Darrell Henderson RB Memphis

Playmaker! Looks to be depth behind Gurley and company. I'm betting he takes over return duties and we part ways with Natson who provided almost nothing outside of returns.

David Long CB Michigan

Might be my favorite pick! It's no secret I think we were in need of young talent at this position. Has the ability to play right now in the secondary and could succeed Talib when he's done. I also don't think this is the end of CB picks for us.

Bobby Evans T/G Oklahoma

Not somebody that was on many if any radars around here. Also the only player we drafted that we didn't work out. From what we're seeing and reading looks like the arch type Kromer Guard. Big strong and mean which could mean he's a bench guy this year and takes over for Noteboom next year or Blythe?

So what do you guys see for tomorrow? My list is simple. Another CB I think it's necessary as the talent behind the starters IMO is lacking. Edge with Fowler signed to one year it would possibly be somebody to compete with a pick next year and Obo. A G/C again we're likely needing 2 guards this year and the front offices MO is to draft for next year. Potentially an ILB with Littleton only signed to the 1 year tender and he could with another good year get signed to a fat raise. WR? We likely have our return specialist but depth is never a bad thing. And QB, Bortles signed to 1 year and who's behind him?

Thoughts?
Thanks for posting this thread OS. My time has been really limited lately and this thread is exactly what I was hoping someone would post.

Rams trade No. 31 pick to the Falcons

Sorry Pop I don’t think you are keeping up with the thread. You would be correct if Snead trades down down down but he now has the capital to trade up down and all around in the all important rounds 2 3 and 4. I bet he trades up in round 2 if his tier 2 picks start fading.

If he trades up, he gives up other capital to do so.

Oddly enough, the 30th-32nd picks have historically been pretty good players, but even moreso since 2010. Excluding last year, because rookies taint the numbers, since 2010 those 3 picks have yielded 17 real contributors, only 5 busts, and 1 (Jahvid Best) who suffered career ending injuries before reaching potential (keeping in mind that in 2016, there were only 31 1st round picks). Dating back from 2009 to 2002, when we went from 31 to 32 teams, and then back to 1999, when we went from 30 to 31, things get more dicey and draw the historical average down. As a matter of fact, aside from the top 5 and 14-17, 29-32 are the best positions in the entire draft.

The speculated reasoning on this is this is prime territory for a team to move in and grab a guy who's unnecessarily fallen for one reason or another. Teams recognize that somebody is on the board who, by all rights, shouldn't be, and want to snag that person before resetting the draft order. These fallers typically only last to the first 4 or 5 picks of the 2nd round. The rationale towards staying in those selections is you will almost always see at least one player with top 10 or top 15 level talent sitting there (this year, it's the OT from Florida; last year, it was Lamar Jackson; the year before, Reuben Foster, etc.). Teams that stay in these slots typically do very well with them because they can afford a BPA strategy, rather than look at need. As a result, they almost always get a value proposition.

If one is to apply some math (considering teams in these last 3 spots are typically the best teams in the league), the proper value of trading out of these 3 positions is a future year's 1st round pick as well as a low round (mid-low 6th) selection, which is A) almost certainly going to be an improvement in standing and B) a luxury top teams can institute, since they are typically more complete organizations.

If you go back through history of teams that have traded out of low 1st round positions for later picks in the same draft, the results are overwhelmingly negative. Only the Patriots have shown relative success doing this, because they have a tendency of turning those 2nd round picks they pick up for getting out of the 1st round....for future 1st round picks. The logic in trading out of the 1st round entirely is that one should go no more than 4 or 5 picks deep into the 2nd round.

Is this flawless math? No, this study we're doing at work as part of a machine learning application still has 5 years to go. But the numbers don't bear out what we did yesterday as being a wise decision. The obsession with accumulating as many picks as possible is going to be considered a relic-level thought process within 10 years.

Rams already receiving calls for pick #31 in 2019 NFL Draft

I under

I understand the initial disappointment in not getting a stud at R1.31 but what do you think contributes to the starter success %s in R2 and R3 that you provided. It’s selecting the right players into the right positions and coaching them up for success. It remains to be seen but I believe the Rams have a very good chance of manuevering thru the R2 and R3 available and finding 3 2029 or 3030 starters. That’s much better than having one stud starter from a draft.
Gd iPhone should read 2019 or 2020 starters.

Marcus Peters, Dante Fowler absent from start of Rams’ offseason workouts

Rams did sign Interior LB'er Clay Matthews. He has been posted up inside for several seasons now & recently said he prefers to play inside.

If ILB'er Delvin Bush is on the board when Snead is ready to pick @ #31 high probability the Rams take him. If David Long is on the board @ 3rd/ #99 he will get a good look over. In the 5th rd #169 pick is where Jahlani Tavai would be a great selection. That my 2 cents worth.

After the dust of the draft has settled thats when we might see Bryce Hager's name come up if there has been no selection of an ILB'er. .

PFF's final 3 round Mock Draft ...

With the 2019 NFL Draft now just hours away, Pro Football Focus’ Mike Renner drops his final mock draft for the 2019 class. The three-round mock draft below is a predictive mock that reflects what Renner thinks teams will do, not what he would do with the picks themselves.

Renner pulled the trigger on four trades in his final 2019 NFL Mock Draft; details are listed below.

Denver Broncos send picks Nos. 10 & 41 to Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for pick No. 5

Washington Redsksins send picks Nos. 15 & 96 to Green Bay Packers for pick No. 12.

Houston Texans send picks Nos. 23 & 86 to Carolina Panthers in exchange for pick No. 16.

Green Bay Packers send picks Nos. 30, 114 & 118 to Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for pick No. 25.

ROUND 1
1. ARIZONA CARDINALS: QB KYLER MURRAY, OKLAHOMA

Not buying the smoke, Murray is the pick

2. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS: EDGE NICK BOSA, OHIO STATE
From a need, talent and value (No. 2 player on our draft board), this makes too much sense.

3. NEW YORK JETS: EDGE JOSH ALLEN, KENTUCKY
The Jets tried to add edge talent all throughout free agency and finally get their guy.

4. OAKLAND RAIDERS: DI QUINNEN WILLIAMS, ALABAMA
No ‘surprise’ here. Quinnen is too damn talented for the Raiders to overthink.

5. DENVER BRONCOS (FROM BUCCANEERS): QB DREW LOCK, MISSOURI
The first trade of the draft! After scraping the bottom of the barrel in the QB market, Elway finally has a chance to get his guy.

6. NEW YORK GIANTS: QB DANIEL JONES, DUKE
The Cutcliffe-Manning connection is too much for the Giants to pass up.

7. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: OT JONAH WILLIAMS, ALABAMA
I’m selling any chance of Williams falling. His tape and work ethic is an OL coach’s dream.

8. DETROIT LIONS: LB DEVIN WHITE, LSU
They just went LB back in 2017, but it can still be addressed. White is too rare an athlete to pass up.

9. BUFFALO BILLS: DI ED OLIVER, HOUSTON
The interior rush for the Bills is non-existent at the moment with Kyle Williams’ retirement.

10. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (FROM BRONCOS): EDGE MONTEZ SWEAT, MISSISSIPPI STATE
Sweat offers similar skillset to Jason Pierre-Paul and could learn from the veteran edge rusher.

11. CINCINNATI BENGALS: OT ANDRE DILLARD, WASHINGTON STATE
Protecting Andy Dalton – or whoever is behind center – should be priority number one with how bad this line was last year.

12. WASHINGTON REDSKINS (FROM PACKERS): QB DWAYNE HASKINS, OHIO STATE
The Redskins jump the QB-needy Dolphins to get their guy to develop.

13. MIAMI DOLPHINS: OT JAWAAN TAYLOR, FLORIDA
They don’t have to go QB, especially considering how bad his pass protection would be if the OL is left unaddressed.

14. ATLANTA FALCONS: EDGE RASHAN GARY, MICHIGAN
The Falcons love athletes on the defensive side of the ball, and no edge in this class has more of it than Gary.

15. GREEN BAY PACKERS (FROM REDSKINS): TE TJ HOCKENSON, IOWA
Call it a ‘safe’ pick if you want, but Hockenson offers a consistent middle of the field weapon the Packers have missed.

16. HOUSTON TEXANS (FROM PANTHERS): OT/G CODY FORD, OKLAHOMA
The Texans get antsy knowing the Giants and Vikings could be in the tackle market.

17. NEW YORK GIANTS: WR DK METCALF, OLE MISS
Big and fast is a combination Dave Gettleman is likely to fall in love with.

18. MINNESOTA VIKINGS: G CHRIS LINDSTROM, BOSTON COLLEGE
Lindstrom is the most solid pass-protecting guard in this class with plug-and-play ability.

19. TENNESSEE TITANS: DI CHRISTIAN WILKINS, CLEMSON
The Titans need a complementary piece to Jurrell Casey, and Wilkins’ versatility would be put to good use in Tennessee.

20. PITTSBURGH STEELERS: CB ROCK YA-SIN, TEMPLE
The Steelers have famously stuck to their guns when drafting secondary, and Ya-Sin would be no different.

21. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: EDGE BRIAN BURNS, FLORIDA STATE
No Frank Clark means no semblance of an edge rush in Seattle currently.

22. BALTIMORE RAVENS: LB DEVIN BUSH, MICHIGAN
Ravens get their replacement for CJ Mosley. Bush brings some attitude to a depleted front-7.

23. CAROLINA PANTHERS (FROM TEXANS): OT DALTON RISNER, KANSAS STATE
Risner has the flexibility to start at any position along the offensive line, which sets them up well in coming years.

24. OAKLAND RAIDERS: RB JOSH JACOBS, ALABAMA
With Marshawn Lynch retiring, the need is obvious. Jacobs receiving skills will be coveted highly.

25. GREEN BAY PACKERS (FROM EAGLES): CB GREEDY WILLIAMS, LSU
The Packers go back to the well. Williams’ fits the Packers scheme far better than Josh Jackson, who could be a candidate to move to safety.

26. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: DI DEXTER LAWRENCE, CLEMSON
Nose is the biggest hole currently on the Colts’ defensive line, and Lawrence offers legitimate three-down ability from the position.

27. OAKLAND RAIDERS: WR MARQUISE BROWN, OKLAHOMA
Hollywood gets to be with his cousin in Vegas. Starting him off in the slot early in his career could be the best way to get immediate production from Brown.

28. LOS ANGELES CHARGERS: S DARNELL SAVAGE, MARYLAND
The Chargers get their single-high dynamo to pair with Derwin James’ box prowess. That’s a lot of speed on the back end.

29. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: TE NOAH FANT, IOWA
Fant’s speed down the field would be put to good use in the Seahawks’ play-action game.

30. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (FROM PACKERS): S JOHNATHAN ABRAM, MISSISSIPPI STATE
Abram’s run and hit ability is special for the position although he may be limited to a box role.

31. LOS ANGELES RAMS: C GARRETT BRADBURY, NC STATE
The best scheme fit in the draft, Bradbury is an elite zone-blocking center.

32. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS: DI JERRY TILLERY, NOTRE DAME
Length and versatility is a calling card for Patriots defensive linemen. Tillery offers both.

38. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: S NASIR ADDERLEY, DELAWARE
39. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: C ELGTON JENKINS, MISSISSIPPI STATE
40. BUFFALO BILLS: OT GREG LITTLE, OLE MISS
41. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (FROM BRONCOS): S JUAN THORNHILL, VIRGINIA
42. CINCINNATI BENGALS: EDGE CLELIN FERRELL, CLEMSON
43. DETROIT LIONS: CB DEANDRE BAKER, GEORGIA

Jrry32's Final Mock Draft

Love your trade, will be stoked if we can pull that off. Moving up in the 3rd would be huge

Great first pick, but am not high on Polite. I think he goes 2 rounds later. Strangely enough, I think Singletary will go earlier than late 3rd - depending on whether other RBs go higher

I have been on board with Nasir at FS for a long time, because he is an impact player, but there will be other good prospects available, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out. FS, MLB, OG/C and CB are our biggest needs, so your draft, while great value, looks a little unbalanced this year Jrry

You knocked it out the park last year, so I will watch with interest

I can't agree those are our biggest needs. That's why we don't see eye to eye.
