Stafford feeling the pressure?

Just one game, the only one I saw, I'm not making any broader claims. Green Bay won 42-21 because they were a better team both running and passing, and because Detroit's D couldn't stop them. But these were the kind of plays that had Rams fans howling at our qb last year. Really what it shows is that, like Mahomes in the Super Bowl, no qb can be expected to look good when under constant pressure.
What I try to focus on when watching those games (think I watched four or five it was tough I don't like the Lions at all to include watching their games lol) is his eye movement to ensure he's getting through reads and then how is he making his decisions. Also his anticipation of the rush which goes back to his grasp of scheme and experience. In the basic QB mechanics he is very, very good.

No QB gets through a game with all good decisions. It's rare at least last game a Rams QB did that was Goff vs Minnesota in LA. I don't want to get too crazy though until I see what they do with the OL. I think they have the QB now question is whether that OL is playoff ready. As you say no QB is gonna look good without enough protection. Difference is how much protection a QB requires. The best ones give you some room for error because they won't break down as much in their mechanics and reads as a guy who is still cutting his teeth or who is too nervous.

The answer to the most asked Stafford question is....

Stafford is a Ford GT, but spent the last 12 years on crappy Detroit roads... hopefully, no permanent damage done that hasn't already been fixed.

Watching him on a wide open freeway (yeah, I'm old enough to remember SoCal freeways not being jammed 24/7...) should be something to behold.

Bradford was a Mustang GT that was a lemon. Should have been pretty nice, but simply broke down too often to be useful and ended up costing a lot of people repair bills before being scrapped.

Wolford was a Focus RS. Pretty sporty, decently solid, but if you whack it, it's gonna break. He's not an F-150 by any means.

I got a hankering for...

Have you tried Lionfish yet? It's a good eat. Nice white meat. The best thing about them in FL is you can take as many as you want.

I have. They're a little too fishy tasting for me, but my oldest son really likes them. There's not a lot of meat on those damn things so it's good that there's no limit on em. We usually have a self imposed limit of about 20 on any fish though. Cleaning that many fish (no matter what kind) the right way is a lot of work.... and some fish are harder to clean than others. Lions are on the harder side for cleaning on top of the small amount of meat. So we don't kill em to eat.

We do kill em though whenever we see them when we're diving. They are an invasive species and they don't belong in the waters on this part of the world. They are creating real problems in the ecosystems here because they have no predators here. Their population here is exploding. It's pretty bad. So we spear them constantly. They like to hang out in the same places lobsters hide... so we always see them.

We've been in several lionfish round ups down in the Keys and in the Bahamas. That's when a bunch of boats go out and see who can kill the most in a day. Winner gets a trophy. In the Keys they give the meat away. I never clean em though because it sucks.

I have had several in my fish tank over the years. They are very cool to watch in a tank. They can cause problems there too though because of their poisonous spines. They always seem to spine my expensive fish in the eye sooner or later. So I've sworn em off in my tank now. Screw those little bastards!

Around the NFCW; The Running Back Room

Looking at off-season priorities for teams in our division...

The Rams appear more set than other teams in our division at RB. Akers and Henderson... young and both can start. We just need to refine and compliment.

What about the others in the NFCW?

Carson, Penny, and Mosart can’t stay healthy. Seattle is not picking up Penny’s option. Carson is a free agent. Mosart is 29, has 1 year left, finished last year on IR.

Kenyan Drake is a nice player, but not exactly a scary guy. I liked Benjamin last year coming out... but he’s not seen the field. Not a good sign.

What do you see?

We seem well ahead of others in our division heading into FA and the draft.

Here’s our new Rams starting OL in 2021...

IF I had to move Havenstein for cap purposes the only player I'm comfortable replacing him with from this roster is Edwards. Edwards has shown from day one that he's got NFL strength and hands. He's the guy. He'd need to adjust his feet to RT which is a complication but he played RT at Wisconsin and it wouldn't take him long to settle in. I would guess he's not as potent as Hav in moving guys in the run game, but he'd probably be a passing game improvement.

From there you need a LG. Does Anchrum come into consideration there? Moving Hav would suck. But it would allow them to move money from RT to C. And we'd be looking at something like...

Whit // xxx // FA // Corbs // Edwards

LG could end up being Anchrum or a rookie which is fine at guard. FA could be one of many possibilities. Is that OL overall better than what we have? Maybe so.

Oh and imagine if the rookie is Meinerz mauling MFers and the Center is a second tier guy like Reiter. You probably have yourself a top tier OL.

Wade Phillips talks McVay, Stafford, and the Rams

I'm with you on this. He still could have put up a great defense for us if they would have focused in and gotten him the right pieces. That's the thing with a great DC, you know what they can do when they have the players. Say what you want about Wade but his defense was money on our SB run in 2018. Also you don't have to worry about teams wanting to steal him away.

But I also get McVay wanting a specific defense so he can learn it. I get that Wade is old. And all that. But all I really care about is the product on the field at the end of the day. Morris will have a good group hope he kills it and gets himself a head coach shot.

It's a shame AD was injured, although I still doubt we beat the Packers.

AD/Suh/Fowler was the kind of pass rush needed for the playoffs.

They were definitely better suited to win in the playoffs

I’ve got a sneaky suspicion about why Rams FA info is taking so long...

The Rams may have laid out renegotiated deals for vets like Whitworth and Brockers and are waiting for an answer. Their agents would likely be holding out to see how ugly this FA market is going to get, but the Rams must have a date they require an answer by. It's probably pretty soon, to give them time to wrap up the rest of their cost-saving moves.

This makes sense.

Slight deviation from topic... but I've always wondered what it would do to a teams competetive drive if you saved 16 mil from your cap and then each game, the best player on our team or the MVP, whatever.. gets a 1 mil bonus.
Some 3rd string corner gets a pick 6 and changes the game? Extra mil.
If 2 players grade the same, they each get half.

If other players don't want AD to get it every game, they better work.

Just a quirky hypothetical... not actually saying I think it's possible or a good idea ... just an interesting thought imo.

Interesting incentive structure. (y)

NFL.com: Goodbread Articles

I have this fear that the Rams will become enamored with Surratt's mental acumen. He's a nice prospect and all but I'd prefer some other options. I'd rather have this guy for example, he's good vs the run with upside. I've watched most of the LBs who slot up to round 3 late and this guy is my favorite (outside of those guys who will go before we're up). Also guys like this are why I still think Bolton might slide, because he doesn't have that upside:

Also some notes on him in a recent article on the Athletic:

57. Los Angeles Rams: Jamin Davis, LB, Kentucky

The Rams need help on the O-line and at linebacker, and Davis would be a great addition … assuming he’s still on the board. We hear his stock is rising fast. Davis only had one big year of production (making 102 tackles and three INTs in 2020), but the buzz is really building on him. This is a kid who is about 6-3, 235 pounds and is expected to run sub-4.6, vertical jump 38-to-40 inches and broad-jump close to 11 feet. He’s also long and versatile. Even though he was given a fourth- or fifth-round grade by the NFL advisory committee, he will go way higher. Davis was expected to be an impact guy in 2019 but hurt his hamstring right before the season. The word inside the UK program is he has a lot of versatility and would be comfortable playing mike or will. There was a big need at mike in 2020, so he stuck there and shined.

The Coaching Intel

“People talk about the Missouri linebacker (Nick Bolton) as a first-round possibility. Bolton is a very good player, but he’s just a will. This kid can play all three positions and is a better player. He’s much longer, more instinctive and has shown he’s able to do a lot more schematically and adjustment-wise. There’s a play in their Florida game, where (Kyle) Pitts is on the ball and runs an over route and Davis ran right with him and made it look easy. There’s so much upside with him.”

Pete Werner is my dude.

It's so hard. I'm probably too close to have any judgement.

I absolutely loved him before last year, but he was playing with so many good players. Take some of those guys away and throw him outside and he looked like the worst CB in the country. What everyone saw in the CFP was happening all season long.

Safety probably does make sense

He's like Malcolm Jenkins. Add a few pounds and play him as a versatile safety. He'll be very good there.

Pre-Free Agency Position Overview: Safety

Pre-Free Agency Position Overview: Safety

The calendar has turned to March, which means the start of the new league year – March 17, 1 p.m. pacific time – and free agency isn't far away.

Ahead of this pivotal time in the offseason, theRams.com will be breaking down the team's roster with an overview of the players currently under contract and those who are scheduled to become free agents.

The series continues with a look at the safeties:

Under contract
  • Jordan Fuller: Sixth-round pick earned starting role as a rookie right away, tying with cornerback Troy Hill for second on the team in interceptions (three) while also making the fifth-most tackles (60) while playing in 12 of 16 regular season games (four missed were due to injury).
  • Taylor Rapp: Logged 44 total tackles, three pass breakups, one interception and one forced fumble in nine games before sustaining a knee injury (Grade 2 MCL sprain) in Week 10 that landed him on injured reserve for the rest of the season.
  • Terrell Burgess: Primarily a special teams contributor as a rookie who also saw some action on defense, the 2020 third-round pick made eight total tackles and one pass breakup before sustaining a season-ending ankle injury against the Bears in Week 7. According to a video posted to his Twitter account, he recently resumed running again.
  • Nick Scott: A key member of the Rams special teams, especially in punt protection and coverage, made 17 total tackles while playing in 15 games – the only one he missed was due to being placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list as part of contact tracing protocol.
  • JuJu Hughes: Undrafted free agent signee out of Fresno State last year, began his rookie season on the team's practice squad before being elevated to the 53-man roster in early October, then signed to the active roster in mid-October to bolster depth at the position in wake of injuries. Ended up appearing in 12 games, making three total tackles.
  • J.R. Reed: Undrafted free agent out of Georgia last year who was originally signed by the Jaguars last spring, waived by the Jaguars in early September, then signed to the Rams practice squad shortly thereafter. First elevated to the 53-man roster in late November before promoted to the active roster in early December, he appeared in seven games and made two total tackles.
  • Jake Gervase (Reserve/Future): Joined the Rams' practice squad late in the 2020 season and was activated from it as a COVID-19 replacement for their Week 15 game against the Jets. He played 16 special teams snaps in the contest.

Scheduled to become a free agent
  • John Johnson III (unrestricted – Free Agent Spotlight): On-field signal caller for the defense who led the team in tackles with 105 while starting in all 16 regular season games. Also made eight pass breakups and an interception.

Better Rams #1 overall pick: Bradford or Goff

The only injury that kept him out of games was the shoulder injury his junior year in 2009.

Rams' approach to pro days unaffected by this year's limitations

Rams' approach to pro days unaffected by this year's limitations

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – After being cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, pro days have returned as an evaluation tool for NFL teams' scouting departments ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Their importance is even greater this year, too. With the pandemic still ongoing, the league changed the format of this year's combine from one centralized location in Indianapolis for individual workouts to having those individual workouts take place at pro days across the country; however, teams are also limited to three representatives at a pro day for public health reasons.

According to Rams general manager Les Snead, those constraints won't impact the team's approach.

"Nothing different than in years past, because in most situations, we probably haven't sent three to a pro day anyway," Snead said during a video conference with reporters Wednesday.

When the traditional format of the combine is in place, Snead said the team weighs whether it is necessary to attend a pro day. Usually, that decision is dictated by whether or not they think they have enough information on a prospect.

"I think for every Pro Day attended, there should be a specific reason," Snead said. "Maybe the case or the file on that player is not necessarily complete yet. Is there anything that we can get from a pro day to complete that file, to help us be more certain that we could onboard that player and he becomes a contributor for us?"

The accessibility of such information – normal year or not – makes it easy to find the answer, and is also part of the reason why Snead is not worried about those limitations.

"So the interesting thing this year, with no combine, all pro days we will share data, but that occurs every year in a system that's referred to as the APT system, where every club doesn't have to attend a pro day, but let's call it a player, subset school, didn't go to the combine, we can get the standard 40-yard dash, standard short shuttles, and that data is shared," Snead said. "So, I think this year, unlike (the) combine, some of those numbers, some of those measurables, would just get to us later in the process."

Perhaps the biggest and most important reason why Snead isn't concerned about the attendance limit relates to strategy.

Capped representation or not, even just one Rams rep in attendance could tip off other teams about about who they're targeting and what direction they'll go in the draft, especially with that rep's role – for example, if they sent their offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator to evaluate a prospect at a specific position. The only obstacle that might make that a challenge is private workouts and facility visits also being banned this year for public health reasons.

"As a club, there is times where maybe you don't want to attend the pro day just because you don't want to show your cards or what have you, and things like that," Snead said. "So, there's always some of that game theory going on."
