17-game season: Here's a look at the NFL's 16-game records

NFL 17-game season: Here's a look at the NFL's individual 16-game records

After 43 years of 16-game regular seasons, NFL owners have voted in favor of adding a 17th game to the schedule for the 2021 season. Adding one more game to the schedule was something that was included in the 2020 collective bargaining agreement, along with the expanded playoff field, which was immediately implemented.

From a historical standpoint, adding another game to the schedule will likely result in each of the league's previously existing single-season records being broken. And while the history books will not distinguish between 16- and 17-game seasons, the following records will -- at least unofficially -- forever stand as the NFL's individual records for a 16-game regular season. Some of these records (specifically the passing records) could be broken as early as this season. Eric Dickerson's rushing record, however, may continue to stand as the all-time record for quite some time.

Here's a look at the notable individual NFL records for a 16-game season, records that are now frozen in time.

Passing yards: Peyton Manning - 5,477 (2013 with Broncos)
  • The league's MVP that season with the Broncos, Manning broke Drew Brees' previous mark (set in 2011) by a single yard. Prior to Manning's 2013 season, the NFL's greatest passing season belonged to Dan Marino, who threw for 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns (astonishing numbers for that time) in 1984.
Passing touchdowns: Peyton Manning - 55 (2013 with Broncos)
  • Manning's 55 touchdowns broke the previous record held by Tom Brady, who threw 50 touchdowns during the Patriots' perfect 2007 regular season.
Passes intercepted: Vinny Testaverde - 35 (1988 with Bucs)
  • The all-time record is held by George Blanda, who tossed 42 picks during the 14-game 1962 season. Hall of Famers Fran Tarkenton (32 in 1978 with Vikings) and Ken Stabler (30 in 1978 with Raiders) along with Richard Todd (30 in 1980 with Jets) and current Saints quarterback Jameis Winston (30 in 2019 with Bucs) were the only other quarterbacks to throw at least 30 interceptions during a 16-game season.
Rushing yards: Eric Dickerson - 2,105 (1984 with Rams)
  • A few were close, but no running back was able to break Dickerson's 16-game rushing record set with the Rams. The closest anyone came to catching Dickerson was Adrian Peterson, who finished with 2,097 rushing yards in 2012 with the Vikings.
Rushing touchdowns: LaDainian Tomlinson - 28 (2006 with Chargers)
  • A fantasy football legend, Tomlinson's 28 touchdowns in 2006 broke a tie between Shaun Alexander (2005) and Priest Holmes (2003) for the all-time record. Tomlinson was named league MVP during his record-breaking season.
Rushing attempts: Larry Johnson - 416 (2006 with Chiefs)
  • Considering the NFL's current running backs-by-committee trend, Johnson's record may go unchallenged for a while.
Receptions: Michael Thomas - 149 (2019 with Saints)
  • The current Saints receiver broke Marvin Harrison's previous mark of 143 catches set during the 2002 season. Antonio Brown and Julio Jones are tied for third after both players caught 136 passes in 2015.
Receiving yards: Calvin Johnson - 1,964 (2012 with Lions)
  • "Megatron" broke the previous mark held Jerry Rice, who tallied 1,848 receiving yards in 1995. The second and third all-time marks are held by Julio Jones, who came within 93 yards of matching Johnson's record in 2015. With the addition of a 17th game, expect the league's first 2,000-yard receiving sometime in the very near future.
Receiving touchdowns: Randy Moss - 23 (2007, Patriots)
  • Moss broke the record previously held by Rice, who caught 22 touchdowns in just 12 games in 1987. Davante Adams' 18 touchdowns in 2020 puts him in a tie for third place with Mark Clayton(1984) and Sterling Sharpe (1994).
All-purpose yards: 2,696 - Darren Sproles (2011, Saints)
  • Sproles broke Derrick Mason's 11-year-old record by 6 yards. During his record-breaking season, Sproles rushed for 603 yards (while averaging 6.9 yards per carries), tallied 703 receiving yards and racked up 1,383 punt/kickoff return yards.
Sacks: Michael Strahan - 22.5 (2001, Giants)
  • While controversy surrounded his final sack, Strahan nevertheless broke Mark Gastineau's 17-year-old record in the final moments of the 2001 season. Jared Allen came within one sack of breaking Strahan's record in 2011.
Most times sacked: 76 - David Carr (2002, Texans)
  • Carr's record was set during the Texans' inaugural season. Carr broke the record formerly held by Randall Cunningham, who was taken down 72 times during the 1986 season. Carr was sacked 68 times -- the third-highest total in league history -- in 2005.
Fumbles forced: 10 - Robert Mathis (2013, Colts), Charles Tillman (2012, Bears), Osi Umenyiora (2010, Giants)
  • Current Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey finished two forced fumbles shy of matching the all-time record in 2020. Cardinals pass rusher Chandler Jones and T.J. Watt each finished with eight forced fumbles (tied with Humphrey for seventh all time) in 2019.
Tackles for loss: 39 - J.J. Watt (2012, Texans)
  • Watt actually holds the top three spots on this list. He racked up 29 tackles for loss during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Chandler Jones (28 in 2017) and Von Miller (28 in 2012) are tied for fourth on the all-time list.
Interceptions: 13 - Lester Hayes (1980, Raiders)
  • Night Train Lane's 14 interceptions in the 12-game 1952 regular season remains the all-time record. But the 16-game record belongs to Hayes, who had three more interceptions called back due to penalty during his remarkable 1980 campaign. Hayes' play that season helped the Raiders win their second Super Bowl.
Passes defensed: 31 - Darrelle Revis (2009, Jets)
  • "Revis Island" is responsible for the most pass breakups in NFL history. Revis broke a first place tie that was formerly shared by Sheldon Brown (27 in 2005) and Troy Vincent (27 in 2001).
Tackles: 156 - Ray Lewis (1997, Ravens)
  • Lewis' 156 tackles is 20 more than the second-highest total (Patrick Willis, 2007). Lewis tallied at least 100 tackles eight times during his Hall of Fame career.
Field goals: 44 - David Akers (2011, Eagles)
  • Akers and Neil Rackers (40 in 2005) are the only players to make at least 40 field goals in one season. Current Ravens kicker Justin Tucker is tied for sixth all time with 38 made field goals during the 2013 and 2016 seasons.
Punt return yards: 875 - Desmond Howard (1996, Packers)
  • Howard's stellar 1996 campaign ended with him becoming the first player to win Super Bowl MVP. His 99-yard kickoff return was the final touchdown scored in Green Bay's 35-21 win over New England in Super Bowl XXXI.
Kick return yards: 2,186 - MarTay Jenkins (2000, Cardinals)
  • The former Cardinal is the only player with at least 2,000 kick returner yards. Josh Cribbs (1,809 yards in 2007) and Michael Lewis (1,807 yards in 2002) are the only other players with more than 1,800 return yards.
Total kick and punt return yards: 2,432 - Michael Lewis (2002, Saints)
  • Former Browns returner Josh Cribbs (2,214 yards in 2007) is the only player who has come close to matching Lewis' record.
Punt returns for touchdowns: 4 - Patrick Peterson (2011,Cardinals) and Devin Hester (2007, Bears)
  • Peterson and Hester are tied for first with former Lion Jack Christiansen (1951) and former Bronco Rick Upchurch (1976).
Kickoff returns for touchdowns: 3 - Ron Brown (1985, Rams), Josh Cribbs (2009, Browns), Andre' Davis (2007, Texans), Jacoby Ford (2010, Raiders), Mel Gray (1994, Lions), Terrence McGee (2004, Bills), Darrick Vaughn (2000, Falcons), Leon Washington (2007, Jets and 2010, Seahawks)
  • The all-time record is still held by Cecil Turner (1970) and Travis Williams (1967). Raymond Clayborn (1977), Gale Sayers (1967) and Abe Woodson (1963) returned three kickoffs for touchdowns during 14-game seasons.

5'5" 285lbs Kicker, Manuel Higuera

He's got a lot of ham in those short stubby legs swinging into that ball. Maybe he's onto something. I would really like it if he could become the greatest kicker in the world to begin a new trend of all kickers being short, fat guys in the future. Would make it far more entertaining.
And we could dress them like these guys.

Oh wait. Wussel Wilson already played that card.

So, what is Rams’ 2021 OL strategy, anyway?

Now we here @ ROD know the OL strategy for this upcoming season does not include Austin Blythe our starting OC the last two seasons.

I still believe that IF one or two NFL teams came out of the draft next month still badly in need of a very good starting RT & are willing to trade off their veteran starting OC it will be strongly considered by Snead.

Snead will go into the draft knowing that he has three OL'ers who will be UFA's in 11 months. All three could be considered starters in 2021 RG Austin Corbett, LT Joseph Noteboom & OC Brian Allen. Snead already has several replacements in line for RG & OC (Corbett & Allen) whereas Noteboom (if not resigned) is more of an issue.

Sneads is going to draft two Ol'ers in this upcoming draft. Center is sure to be the priority targetted position. Even with the possible departures in 2022, this Ol cadre should remain strong. It sure appears that 40 yr old Whitworth plans to be here next season even if Noteboom supplants him later this season.

The only question to be answered is who will come out of the Training Camp battle for Blythe's post...either Allen or Shelton are the main 2 starting prospects @ OC. Both have been banging around now entering their 4th season. I would presume there is sure to be a drafted highly prized rookie right in there with them fighting it out too. Not a bad position to be in.

The other four OL posts that surround the OC post remain the same now for two seasons. There's your continuity Snead was speaking of. Both Allen & Shelton have been here together since 2019. Snead Mcvay knows their capabilities.

LT-Whitworth/Noteboom
LG-Edwards/Brewer/Demby
OC-Shelton/Allen/Rookie
RG-Corbett/Anchrum
RT-Havenstein/Evans

Just only need to say WRONG!! Brian Allen took over for John Sullivan 2 years ago.Blythe only took over for him after Allen got hurt.
—Just saying...... so we are now saying he is worse than in 2019??
—BTW we can still talk about Brian Allen as a Guard. Will NEVER HAPPEN in a RAMS JERSEY!!!

Around the NFC West at the end of March

Minus a miracle I believe the Rams will go 4-2, possibly 5-1 in their division this year. The Cards have made moves that will make them competitive but still short. The Hawks will be the same, so the game up north is a toss up. Until McVay pulls up his sweatpants and doesn’t get out coached by Shanahan there is no telling how the 49er games go (if the Rams get swept pitch forks and flame are acceptable).
I hate to say it, but beating them ought to be easier without some (one) of our players being a niner fan. If we still can't beat them, yeah I'm with you on the pitchforks.

Rams’ 5 biggest needs after first wave of free agency

The OP was top 5 ‘needs’, so I’m gonna take that literally.

Here are Rams’ top 5 ‘needs’, in order.

1a is Center. Duh! Unless they’re planning on starting a guy already on the roster.

1b is WOLB. Our current roster lacks anyone that has proven himself There. They might go with a FA here just for insurance, in fact.

3-5 are tricky because they’re kinda preparing for ‘22 needs more than contributors this year.

LOT
CB
WR (deep threat)

I would make ILB #6 need, if that’s not cheating.

Now, what will they actually draft and in what order? Who knows?

My guess is that Snead will trade down somewhat in any round IF he likes the landscape below relative to his board. That’s assuming that he can find a partner AND that a blue chipper hasn’t fallen into his lap from another position group. And he will probably draft BPA from the above positions at each pick.

8to12 Post FA Mock (3.0)

@8to12

We will have to agree to disagree on Nasirildeen in coverage vs Johnson.

Johnson was a college CB to moved to S. Johnson's skills made him interchangeable at FS AND SS.

He was capable of covering the slot vs. WRs who are much better than the likes of McMath in that clip who caught all of 33 passes for 522 yards in 3 seasons and has been more of a special teams guy so far. He was never considered a box safety only, like some consider Nasirildeen.

Rams News: 7-round Rams mock draft: Finding starters at OLB, C and ILB

Is it just me? Or, does anyone else get annoyed with people who publish a Mock draft and use a 3rd party simulator to determine what players to pick from?

I prefer it.

He has data for why the players fell to where they did. Doesn't mean they will in real life but it's better than someone making a completely unrealistic mock. Here he can show which players went ahead of the ones he drafted

Terrell Burgess a key in the secondary

As we have discussed before the way Staley played Ramsey was so perfect....if the opponents best WR lined up in the slot Ramsey was there if the best wideout lined up in the other two WR post-Ramsey was there & many times Ramsey was permitted to be the wild card & play any of the safety post assignments...once again the results was what we wanted.

Having that other corner to play outside is the key here if the Rams want the great results they got out of Ramsey in the 2021 season. Just signing a Nickle corner does not permit the Ramsey STAR position to be implemented as often. What is needed is a starting outside corner! Now if means utilizing that first draft selection on day two to get a starting outside corner ........then lets make it so!

I know your not a big fan of David Long. I get it, but Troy Hill really stepped up as a slot CB. This aloud RAMsey who you talk so much about moving outside was allotted.
D.Williams was a shut down CB as well, leaving it hard for Burgees & Long playing time. Add Fuller’s play as well who beat Burgees out as a safety.
The Rams almost resigned Troy Hill who most around here thought he should have been cut all the way back in 2018 & 2019.As well as going into the 2020 season.

DeSean Jackson’s contract with Rams - $2.75 million plus incentives

How about fit as well as McVay thinks Stafford will fit in this offense.

Yeah - I think Matthew Stafford has a strong arm & as DJ11 says.Just throw it deep.
I believe he has an excellent feel for the pocket & will be able to set pass rusher up to extend the pocket & find open receivers downfield.I don’t think his hard count is as good as The Rams have had.
Having DJ11 on the field just knowing he can be dangerous on Jet Sweeps will make things easier.I know Brandon Cooks & Tavon add that speed factor keeping LBers at home more.
I do think Matthew Stafford brings an element of reading defenses that DJ11 can find open space just by connecting on the line of scrimmage.I believe having a veteran of WR’s is going to be awesome.
BTW- Josh Reynolds didn’t do The Rams many favors when it came to adjustments.I mean Tory Holt & Faulk were special players. Todd Gurley got a little heady, but was a smart player with The Rams.

Jason Oweh pro day

Freak athlete. But it's hard to overlook the lack of production (0 sacks this year).

Penn state was a mess this year. Unlike some other Big Ten schools they followed all of the on again off again training camp rules. The entire team was not playing well due to lack of preparation. Still some players looked good by seasons end. Oweh got pressure but Toney got the sacks.

I think his pro day puts him in the first round but I think it’s too early for a guy so new to football.

Are the Rams Talking/Negotiating with ANY Free Agents?

So off top of my head. Ben Garland and Round 2/3 OC improves Ol. KJ Wright would be phenomenal but LJ Fort at ILB improves ILB. Round 3 adds to Edge.
OK. That’s reasonable and well thought out.

I thought you were frustrated the Rams had not done more just ten days into the start of the League Year.

Much of the above is Draft related; and the players you mentioned are all still available. So the Rams can still do all the above. Don’t know that I see as much in the veterans you mentioned. I like Kiser a lot; and have my fingers crossed with Howard (the projected 2020 starters).

As for veterans that have not signed in the past ten days, my thought is that most have simply not gotten the type of offers they wanted and are being patient. Those free agents, and the three you mentioned above may be among them, will have to wait; and may have to take less to continue their careers.

That’s not likely to happen until later in the off-season (we’re 10 days in). The Rams may not fill out roster needs with veteran signings until post-Draft, when many free agent vets have to make a decision and their options are limited.

Help me out please: Rams updated Depth Chart?

I'd imagine the Rams dont have an official depth chart at this point, probably dont put one together until after OTAs
Here's an interesting one

OLB Leonard Floyd Talks Re-Signing With The Rams | Press Conference

It's about the talent too. And the fact the Rams are one of those fortunate teams who have an eye for talent. Floyd made a really good decision in returning and he's gonna get a ring here.
The Rams were finally able to pry the potential out of him, and it's not just as it's been said, the pass rushing.. he's an elite run defender and lanky, a freak athlete.

Phi Trading #6

Didn't Lewan go after Donald?
I may be wrong, but for some reason I thought we could have had both. Especially since we took Grob before Donald in the same draft. (Something I've tried to forget)

I thought he went at 14. Apparently not.

what I meant was that since the seemed to prioritize Left Tackle if they didn’t have the Skins first round pick at #2 and only have one pick maybe they pick Jewan James to play Lefy tackle instead of AD

Collinsworth - Frank Reich & Richard Sherman discuss Matthew Stafford

Ya I "hate" Sherman too, but man I'd love to spend a couple hours with him picking his brain about everything BUT football.

One guy that has primarily played safety but also played in the slot a lot is Xavier Woods. He could be a versatile player that can be signed cheap if the Rams are concerned with replacing Hill
