McVay/Schrager podcast series

Listened to both episodes on the highway and while mowing today.

It's very interesting and there are some interesting stories and nuggets of insight you don't normally get.
For instance, McVay says he tends to be more impulsive than patient.
I found that interesting. Matt Lafleur pointing out that he can't think of a certain play the way Sean can, who famously "remembers every play he's ever called". He called him "rainman" haha. I mean, that's well known about McVay and has always been seen as part of his brilliance as a play caller... but for the first time I kind of pondered how that could almost become a burden for McVay. Just a thought.

I believe that.

It's up to youngsters Jordan Fuller, Taylor Rapp now that Rams' safety net is gone

We may be 4 deep at safety with Fuller > Rapp > Burgess > Scott. Fuller is undoubtedly the cornerstone now. So three young safeties competing for one spot means someone will rise.

Now maybe Burgess gets pulled out to compete at the slot. But either way I love the situation. Competition breeds success and this should be an outstanding preseason for us to track the battles. Slot should be a good one too. (y)

Matthew Stafford on | The Rich Eisen Show | 5/24/21 Corbett @ center?

Would love to see Anchrum take over that right guard spot. Then Noteboom and Evans can be the back-up tackles this year, and both will start next year.

Wishful thinking. Cheers to Love !
I’d love for Anchrum to be The Starting Center over Austin Corbett.
Then The Rams would have another 2 seasons as him starting at Center.
—Maybe sign Corbett on the cheap & cut Brian Allen.

IMO - Brian Allen shows his value at Center & who starts the season is still very much up in the air.
-I could see Evans start over Austin Corbett very easily?

The NFC Favorites No One Is Talking About

There is no reason to think the Rams can't be the final team standing. You can nitpick any roster. I think Buffalo is going to be the AFC team this year but if you start nuking their roster they were 14th in points against last year and 24th in passing yards allowed. Sure they drafted some badly needed edge types and we know they draft well but point is you could pick them apart. Same with KC. Same with any other team.

This roster is loaded with dogs. Why not us.

Path to creating explosive plays with Matthew Stafford starts in OTAs

This all depends on the OL getting it done in pass pro. They will have to bee better up the middle in keeping Stafford clean. That includes RB's picking up blitzing LB's and S's. Malcolm Brown is gone and Akers and Hendo need to get better at that. Hopefully Funk makes the team and he steps up at RB in 3rd and long situations, something he's done in college.

Akers and Henderson are the primary RB's and neither were very good at picking up blitz' for Goff. I see this as a huge concern. Stafford may be better at recognizing blitz', but he's not exactly a scrambling QB.

Rams OLB Terrell Lewis needs a breakout year

When the Rams drafted Lewis, they knew about the durability issue and that's why he slipped to the 4th round,
84th pick - 3rd round. But yeah, he would have gone much sooner without that history.

Hopefully with NFL staff and doctors, he will get past that. I think the Rams were kind of banking on that. I don't know that they ever really viewed him as a 3 down player, but more a pass rush specialist that they could utilize in a way that might keep him available all season.

He was a gamble and we'd all love to see that gamble pay off.

Kurt Warner on 49er's QB Trey Lance

I know. I know. It's Chris Simms, but read it anyways!

Nothing much to say on Simms, but just wanted to say I dig the new Avatar!!!!

Better, Same, Weaker

I am watching replay of the Jets loss this year. In the opening drive of second half the Jets drove down and scored aTD on 4th and 1. In this series I saw Reeder get juked/whiff by old man Gore in a hole up the middle, badly miss coverage on a short pass in the middle and get blown back off the line on the TD. I know he made some plays this year but the Rams have to know they need and deserve better from a starting ILB. Just like Blythe, Reeder can be depth but it’s time to upgrade up from his C— play.

Who Will Win The NFC West 2021? The Best Division In The NFL Post Draft Analysis!

Rams, baby! WE (yes us) will have the best QB in the division this year. I guess I am worried most about Staley leaving. Still, Stafford will be a wonderful upgrade. His processing speed is the major bonus here. I expect a few bumps in the road to start, though. We will win the division.

R. Wilson will slip due to either injury or age. He will overcompensate for his less than great D and try to force things to win games and will be detrimental to his team. Seahawks place 2nd.

Niners D will slip due to Saleh leaving. QB is wide open for them and may cause continuity issues after Gspot gets hurt again. Niners in 3rd place.

Cards will be competitive but not quite good enough for the division. Cards fall and won’t make playoffs.

Kurt Warner - Will the Rams repeat as the NFL's #1 Defense? and Aaron Donald could be the best interior pass-rusher the NFL has ever seen

That's a great point that can easily be forgotten at times. We struggled offensively, last year
and yet had an elite D.
I believe that our offensive woes forced us to play low risk D.
If our offense takes off like I think it will, that will allow
us to be more aggressive defensively.
Part of what helped our defense was because our offense was so passive last year. They had very few quick strike scores or big down field plays on offense and the long, methodical drives are what helped give our defense a breather and win the time of possession battle.

Warner breaking down Staley's scheme

The light box look and the Packers' ability to make it an actual light box helps explain what went wrong in the playoffs.
One play you see over and over from Green Bay in that game is they lined up in two back sets and motioned the other RB out which drew Reeder out of the box. Then they ran into said light box with a lot of success.

They also isolated Hill and double moved Williams but I felt like all that stuff started with the run game. Give Rodgers a run game and you're up shit creek.

Re: the 3-3-5 it is the pre-snap safety usage that is important. Rams did so much creative shit with Staley that I fear Morris will suffer if he tries to emulate too much of that shit. So I am just trying to anticipate what he may do. I am gonna look at some of Atlanta's film and see what he changed when he took over but either way it is a fascinating DC change and I can't wait to see what they do.

‘Kicker’s jacked, man’ | 10 Things with Matt Gay

Here is what I don't understand...On the Ram website why do they not have pictures of certain players? On the roster, Matt Gay is one of them, I wonder if players have to agree or something like that, but on the website players like Gay, Wirtel, Hollins & J.R. Reed no pictures.

As to Matt Gay, so glad the Rams signed him. He was highly coveted and missed some kicks for Tampa, Bruce Arians felt better going with the veteran in Ryan Succop and he wasn't wrong because Succop had a great year, but the Rams benefited as Gay solidified not only the field goal kicking, but also kickoffs too.

Now Gay being 27 seems ready to propel himself as a reliable option and with his leg, the Rams can kick long field goals, if they chose to do so.
