Sean McVay talks coaching with Joe Judge on 'Flying Coach' podcast

Sean McVay talks coaching with Joe Judge on 'Flying Coach' podcast

Sean McVay has kept busy during this quiet part of the offseason, starting to host a podcast with Peter Schrager on The Ringer. If you haven’t listened tuned in already, it’s called “Flying Coach” and is one of the best football podcasts around right now.

Each week, McVay and Schrager have a new guest coach on the podcast, and for the latest episode, Joe Judge was invited. It was almost an hour-long conversation with Judge, as the Giants coach talked about working under Nick Saban and Bill Belichick, Daniel Jones’ progression heading into Year 3 and his favorite player to coach, Julian Edelman.

At the end of the show, McVay talked about his former coaches who have gone onto new teams, led by Chargers head coach Brandon Staley. He’s confident all of them will succeed in their new roles, even though he’s disappointed not to have them on the Rams anymore.

“I think Brandon Staley’s gonna do a great job with the Chargers. This is a guy that’s got great command and capacity in all three phases. Spending a year with him, when you understand the intricate knowledge of the game, the details, the way he’s able to see the game through the lens of his background as a quarterback, understanding and being around some really good coaches to where you’re saying, ‘All right, I know what I want it to look like when I’m leading. I’m surrounding myself with great coaches that are leading on all three phases, while also having an ownership ability to develop a relationship with (Justin) Herbert, I think Brandon will do a really nice job.”

McVay said he’s excited to see “how he activates the Derwin James of the world, the Joey Bosas, Kenneth Murray,” saying the Chargers have some “exciting pieces.”

2020 Atlanta Falcons Defense

The good news; Morris has a lot of football experience.

But, yeah… it’s not only a new scheme… he needs to “call the game”. Which means having a feel for it.

Morris has some catch-up work to do.
Absolutely. But everything that I have heard about him from the player interviews is that he is a very high energy, very intense coach.
Sound familiar? :giggle:

IMO. A personality match is far more important in the long run than a "schematic history" match.
Morris and McVay have a long history together, So McVay would have a very good idea about

The ability and desire of Morris to not only learn the Fangio D , but also his ability to run it.
If I'm Morris, I'm thinking that learning to run this defense is a huge career, momentum boost.

Learning curve? Yep, but I feel it's just gonna get better as the season goes.

I have no doubt McVay knows this defense inside and out.
How many offensive HC's' would be capable of this? Most rely on what ever system a new DC hire brings with him.

Maybe I'm a Homer, I don't give a flip. I'm drinking whatever kool-aid our HC is pouring.

Debating which team will win the NFC West: Rams, Seahawks, 49ers or Cardinals? | First Take

My favorite part was when Keyshawn said in response to the other guy, "Pfft, Stafford throws 4000 yards every year!" as if that was a come back that trashed the other guys opinion.....lol! That is Government level stupid!
Yes. Lol. But he won't throw for 4,000 this year. Much more. I might have predicted Bobby Trees and Kupp both in the top 5 receiving but I feel if VJ breaks out, it'll take a tick off their numbers.

Is this a game worn jersey?

Do game day jerseys have the elastic waist band? Also I was told the NFL shield should have 3 rows of 8 stars vs a smaller number of stars.
Looking at other pictures I think the shield looks correct
They're using the 2016 collar, not the 2017 one, so I doubt it's game worn. It could be something he signed when he first came to the team.

Yeah, this makes the most sense. Guess in the offseason when we acquired him the '16 style was still in. It probably changed May-July that year? So, not game worn, but a legit game jersey (2016 prior to change)

Will there or won’t there be competition for starting punter?

It will be hard to justify paying a punter over $4m unless he is truly a difference maker game after game.

I was on that side of letting Hekker go,but since Mcvay came out otherwise, makes it hard to see Johnny getting cut(released).

Won’t say it will not happen.Do believe it is a good thing having an extra quality punter.Ball machines are only so good,& the return game is what Mcvay wants to improve on.I thought Webster did an okay job as a PR/KR guy.He will never be much of a WR & always less than a Top 15 return guy.
The Rams want to set a realistic goal of Top 10 across the board on special teams.Having Copper Kupp as a PR guy (stunk) was not a good move imo by Mcvay.I do think he will still try to compete though.Hope he gets fazed out.
