Jrry32's First Mock Off-Season - New Year's Eve Edition

As you know @jrry32 I don't put in any time on draft prospects. The question I have is how much more value Gaines has over Ashon in FA.

I love Gaines but he played most of the season hurt and Ashon of course was out for the latter part of the season. So... Do other teams value Gaines that highly? Not sure.

The chemistry between AD and Gaines is enough reason IMO to pay a bit more to keep him.

I like Ashon but it seems Gaines has been receiving that AD influence more. Dunno.

What position should we target first (the pros and cons)

Pocic is yet another guy I liked (and mocked) for the Rams, but…
It is annoying to watch games and see solid, if not thriving, Centers that you wanted for the Rams when they were drafted. I guess it comes with the territory when you have been screaming for a Center who could be a legit anchor on the OL for nearly every year for the last 10+ drafts.

What Assistant Coaches Do You Want? Who do you think they will hire? Who have they hired?

The OL did look like dog shit early in the season. The injuries sank the season for sure but prior to that these guys were not a good line. Far from it. Funny thing is when I considered that a few months back in kicking around the idea of the OL coach getting canned it seemed to me that not playing the starters in preseason, along with the line retooling, was likely part of the problem. So I wasn't comfortable saying he deserved to be fired.

But the guy might be a whiny bitch behind the scenes. Or irritating enough to rub the boss the wrong way.

I have to say the OL improvement we saw in the Super Bowl season was the best I've seen in many years. The technique improvement in picking up blitzes and stunts was profound. So Carberry will probably have plenty of good choices in his next job.

All that aside I'm not gonna feel sorry for him. I never got the feeling Carberry is some sort of savant with the line. So onwards and upwards and let's hope McVay kills this hire for his replacement because improvement on that line is sorely needed.
Agreed. The Bills game didn't bother me because we were breaking in a new OL against an elite DL without any preseason experience. The OL actually seemed to stabilize against Atlanta and Arizona. It played well in both games despite us losing Brian Allen. The wheels came off against SF and Dallas, but at that point, we had already lost Allen, Edwards, Bruss, Anchrum, and then lost Shelton early in the SF game.

Les Snead and the Silver Lining ...

I’m criticizing his drafting, especially after Holmes left.
And how do you like Brad Holmes' drafts with the Lions? I think he selected some pretty good players.....Hutchinson, Williams, Sewell, St. Brown, Joseph, Houston, Melifonwu, etc. But in comparison to Snead's drafts those 2 years, the Lions had 4 selections before Snead made his first pick this year and 4 selections before Snead made his 2nd selection in 2021, so Holmes drafted 8 players by the time Snead had taken 1. Besides that, Detroit only had 4 picks after the 5th round, total in those two drafts while Snead had 8. What also has to be taken into consideration is the rosters. There was much more room on the Lions roster in 2021 and 2022 for these draft picks to play. And still, the Lions are 12-21-1 while the Rams are 17-17.

Who gets credit for Terrell Lewis, Terrell Burgess, Clay Johnston, Sam Sloman, Dakota Allen, Jamil Demby and Bobby Evans? Snead or Holmes?

It doesn't matter if you win by 1 or 100 the point is you shouldn't have to worry about that having a game costed to you by the refs. With you posting with the 2001 SB you should know this, but hey, that extra chromosome your older sister gave you probably makes it tough to comprehend that.

Rams Waive Bobby Evans

Elevation?
Keep in mind that Evans barely sniffed the field in Carberry's 1st season and didnt get any significant snaps in '22 until AFTER the Rams had already lost:
Anchrum-9/25
Bruss- Pre-season
Noteboom- week 1
Who's to say he ever woulda saw the field. Sure, its a bad look the guy sucked so bad but the bigger question is how did he make it almost 4 years before they realized how bad he was?? Cant put that solely on Carb
a lot of bad shit happened last season. No team could survive all the injuries the Rams endured.

Les Snead The best ever ?

Extending Goff early was a fairly large mistake.

But most of his trades have worked out, and most of the free agent decisions have worked out (both signing and letting players leave). I think compared to the other current GMs, his combination of drafting, FA decisions and trades probably still make him the best in the NFL in spite of a few contract missteps
In general I agree with everything here. I've said how stupid the Goff extension was when he and McVay had seen this guy every day in practice, meetings and games to send him after extending him them trading him away on a down year (not netting max possibilities) was a bad mistake. Even if McVay wanted him gone they should have waited one more season if there was any doubt. Greg Robinson was real bad mistake falling in love with his alma mater players. But in the same round he got AD which is hilarious one guy in prison the other possibly the best player of all time.

FAs have been great, Ramsey a supposed washed up 8n Cleveland Corbett, Wagner, Woods, Whit, DWill etc. His drafts have been good not great FAs better minus AD, JJ 3, Kupp and some other role starters. But it is the players he has drafted usually have worked well enough to get good deals on other teams so obviously it shows 5hey were developable talent.

I have been a Ram fan forever (60s) but didn't follow their drafting/FAs like I do now. Trajectory wise I'd say he is up there as the best Ram ever and top 2 in the current NFL.

My power rankings

I think the Bengals upset the Bills. They were moving the ball on the Bills defense almost at will in the cancelled game. Joe Burrow is more clutch than Allen and the connection to Jamar Chase will be decisive.
It should be a great game. Concerns should be:
Will Allen try to do too much as he is prone to do?
Will the Bengals OL, missing a couple of starters be up to the task?

Importance of Health and Continuity on the O-Line

Saffold had some sort of shoulder issue that caused him to be injured every year. Then he finally got it fixed (don't ask me why he took 5 years to get it fixed - no clue on that) and he has hardly been injured ever since.
Shoulder, ankle, knee.....it doesn't matter. My point was, he WAS injury prone and then he wasn't. I remember whenever he went down and the trainers came out, I say, "oh great, how long is he gonna be out now?"
