Jimmy Lake and Aubrey Pleasant

Well, Lake is not going to be a DB coach. His title is Assistant Head Coach. I find this interesting because Jimmy is a very good defensive coach but was unprepared to be a HC at Washington. Now he will be mentored by one of the best in Sean McVay. I like Jimmy Lake and feel if he can learn from McVay the ins and outs of being a HC in the NFL he could be very good. This will make him a target for NFL teams in a year or two. It could also backstop the Rams should McVay once again get wandering feet. This sounds like Snead/Kronke getting Sean to hand pick an potential successor. It also gives them an option to Morris next year if he gets hired away or fired.

Either way I see Jimmy joining the Rams as a good thing.

Aubrey Pleasant returns as DB coach and passing game coordinator. He was very good when he worked under Wade Phillips, and the DBs played both man and zone concepts. He's another that could take over at DC. I like his return and hope he does a good job. He coached the DBs under Phillips to play aggressively, but Peters and NRC sabotaged Phillips and Pleasant. Both Peters and NRC, like Kendrick were more interested in splash plays and were undisciplined. Kendrick needs to quit going rogue and to give 100% effort 100% of the time. Hopefully, Pleasant can coach up the young players, and get them to contribute at a high level. I still feel Morris is squandering some very important years for Rochell by burying him on the depth chart.

I find it interesting that Pleasant took the blame for the defensive woes whereas Campbell's friend Aaron Glenn who was DC gets a raise. Pleasant was following Glenn's lead but gets the blame? After watching some Lion games IMO it was the scheme as much as the players either inexperience or lack of talent. Either way it's the DC's job to know his roster and play to their strengths.

McVay is doing the same thing with Morris. Blaming the failings of Morris' scheme on his assistants. People wonder about the lack of sack production but don't understand the cause has more to do with Morris' uber soft zone scheme and not AD and Floyd getting old. Also, how is Floyd supposed to get sacks when Morris has him dropping into coverage? They are short handed in pass rushers but drop one of their best into coverage? A big ass DUHHH on that.

I keep hoping for change but to expect it is futile.

DEFCON 2: Starting to doubt the next few seasons

I don’t see any scenario a McVay coached team finishes low enough for Caleb.
Pretty easy to see actually. We would have picked 6th this year with Ramsey, Floyd, Robinson, Gaines, Rapp, Scott, Long...etc., and a fucked up o-line. No guarantee our o-line will be better and our d-line sure as hell won't be as good. It IS entirely possible that we become doormats this season thereby putting into play a VERY HIGH selection in the 2024 draft.

River's Trade Ramsey Mock ...

Well, this mock went belly-up 24 hours after it was posted, just as soon as the media inspired rumors about Ramsey, Floyd & Robinson being traded or becoming CAP Casualties went into full effect.
If the Rams draft is now looking to go head-on into fixing offensive flaws while sacrificing some defense, then other than an Edge Rusher which might be traded for or drafted, I suspect we'll be placing a higher emphasis on the OL, TE, RB and higher quality back-up QB, likely another WR too. Van Jefferson & Higbee will probably stick as they ride the final year of their fairly inexpensive contracts. So as this mock quickly became obsolete, our 2023 season also becomes more interesting, less predictable, and in my case, rather more unfathomable.

I have one question: does what you fear make sense?

I’m speaking both directly to some of you here, as well as rhetorically to Rams fans at large.

I know what you fear. You fear that the Rams are planning a purge that, in essence, trades short term potential (i.e. the 2023 season) for long-term stability. Such an approach would not be unheard of, of course. Many teams have taken such an approach in the past.

My question, though, is whether it makes sense that this would be the Rams’ plan right now?

Here’s why I think it does not make sense. Sean McVay (potential burnout and opportunities in sports media), Matthew Stafford (age, wear and tear) and Aaron Donald (age, little left to accomplish) seem to be on a year-to-year status right now. If that is the case, and the franchise knows it, wouldn’t it make far more sense for the current plan to be DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO WIN NOW, rather than some cap health/long game approach?

If that argument makes sense to you, then follow the logic trail. It will lead you to the conclusion that the “purge” rumored to be taking place will be followed by some strategic acquisitions calculated to put the Rams in a position to compete NOW.

That doesn’t mean the plan will succeed but, at least, it allows for hope, rather than resignation.

So… be patient. They’re cracking some eggs… let’s see how the omelette turns out.

Just IMO of course. The window is still open for the Rams to compete for a championship. The pillars are still there but the O line needs to be fixed and then the obvious shortcomings such as Allen Robinson must either improve or be traded for someone who contributes. We need a decent inside linebacker and an edge who can put pressure on the QB. We have some draft capital but free agency is likely to fill the gaps.

I think Ramsey stays another season if the Rams plan to make another run at the title. I don't see McVay wanting to rebuild.

AROB on the move

Robinson is the one asking for the trade.

With Jefferson settling in at X WR and Atwell and Skowronek at Y WR the hand writing is on the wall. Both Atwell and Skowronek looked good with Mayfield. I agree with Merlin that Stafford was a major part of the problem. He simply leaned on Kupp too much. Now with tendonitis and his spinal contusion both of which could be chronic problems. Remember his spinal contusion gave him weakness in his legs not allowing him to step into his throws, and as such he overcompensated with his arm leading to the shoulder and elbow issues. This is why Snead and McVay can't bank on him any longer. They are locked into Stafford because of his cap number, and they can't be sure how he will be in September. That is why IMO they will sign Mayfield at a premium for a backup and that has created this cascade of releases and trades.

They might have to pay Mayfield as much as $8M to be a backup this year. They already owe him $4.8M in deadcap which is why IMO they released Wagner. Now they are looking at another $6-$8M this year.

Philip Rivers considering comeback?

Four Destinations For Philip Rivers

During his eponymous show today, Rich Eisen put together a rumor roundup of things he heard while at the NFL Combine. He strongly caveated that he was not reporting the information in the segment, just that they were things he heard from all sorts of different football folks gathered in Indianapolis. One of the things he heard was rather... unexpected.

Philip Rivers apparently tried to get back into the NFL late last season and placed calls to the Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers following their QB injury issues.

"We all know two teams that were quarterback-needy at the end of the season. Starting third-stringers and had a chance to go to the playoffs and maybe making a deep run in the playoffs. Referring to the Miami Dolphins and, of course, the San Francisco 49ers. I heard at the Combine, No. 5 on this list, that Philip Rivers contacted both of them to come back late last year. That's what I heard and that's the way I heard it."

Well, I did not have that on my NFL offseason bingo card. Of course, such information begets an article wondering where Rivers might go if he does make his professional football return. Are there teams desperate enough to kick the tires and see if he has anything left?

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins obviously turned Rivers down if he did indeed give them a call after Tua Tagovailoa went down again late in the year, but they are in a worse spot than the Niners in terms of the QB spot. So they're more likely to say yes a second time around. Skylar Thompson did his best but he did nothing to suggest that Miami is fine if they roll into next year with only him and Tagovailoa on the depth chart. The 2022 season showed that the Dolphins badly need competence behind Tua in case he gets hurt again. They should go with Rivers for his veteran voice. And the content.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bucs are too screwed cap-wise to take a big swing on a good quarterback who may be available this offseason and won't sniff a decent signal-calling prospect picking in the late teens. This is why there are leaks out there expressing irrational confidence by the front office in 2021 second-round pick Kyle Trask. Tampa Bay is not going to be good this year unless Tom Brady unretires and even then it's a toss-up. So why not be entertaining while it happens by bringing in Rivers for a tryout? It can't be all that worse than starting a guy many believed to be the seventh-best prospect (at best!) in his class.

His Couch

Come on, Philip. What're you doing, man? You made your millions ($243 million, to be exact), you have an infamously large brood of children, and you're coaching high school football in Alabama. You really want to throw all that away to get plastered by gigantic defensive linemen nearly 20 years your junior? Stay at home. Watch the games on the couch in what I assume must be the most impressive man cave in the region. Don't do this.

St. Michael Catholic High School

But if Rivers really cannot shrug off the itch to play again, he's got a whole team at his disposal! Rivers is the head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama. They went 5-5 last year so obviously they need a roster upgrade. When a professional football player retires and returns to the state he grew up, he pretty much runs the place, so I can't imagine too much complaining if Rivers were to suit up in lieu of the high schoolers he's supposed to be mentoring. Nope. Cannot forsee any problems at all. It seems like the perfect solution.
