Steve Smith joins NFL Network
Posted by Josh Alper on February 2, 2017

Wide receiver Steve Smith was always one of the better quotes in the league during his 16-year NFL career and his retirement from the playing field won’t mean the end of access to his thoughts on the game.

In a tweet on Thursday, Smith told Rich Eisen of NFL Network to “ice up” because he will be joining Eisen and the rest of the league’s broadcast team as an analyst. In a more formal announcement of the plans, NFL Network said that Smith’s duties will start this Sunday as part of their Super Bowl coverage.

“I was blessed to have a long and productive playing career on the field but now it’s time to turn my attention to the business of covering the game and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be joining the team at NFL Network,” Smith said in a statement. “As the only network with a 100% focus on the sport I love, I was drawn to NFL Network and look forward to joining a team made up of many legends of the game.”

Smith played his final season for the Ravens. He ended his career with the seventh-most receiving yards in history and is 12th all-time in receptions.

I have a tendency to end my hate for players the moment they retire.
I literally stomped a hole in the floor when he "took it to the house" on us.
Since then I've always had a nervous twitch when hearing the name; even if it's just other random dudes I've met in life named Steve Smith. A little small micro seizure every time.
But now that he's retired. I'm at peace.

It's like you're reading my mind. LOL

I can see Smith having a little Barkley in him behind the mic now. I hated him too when he was still playing... but I enjoy his big mouth behind the mic.

I agree with you gents I love me some Steve Smith off the field behind the mic but i differ is I loved his play on the field as well. Loved how he was a little guy and still able to be dominate and put up numbers regardless. I don't blame him vs our loss in the playoffs that year I blame Jason Seahorns dumb ass.

I am rooting for him. He has that Elite Competitor mentality which can translate to any field. Lots of work to do with dropping the Ego, mastering the stats and X's and O's and communicating effectively.

I thought the same about Moss, but he's one of the more tolerable ones.

True, Moss is better than I thought he would be but, he isn't a great communicator. Smith always came across as brash and a hard headed. Maybe he loses the edge for TV but I hated when Woods on (I think that was the guy) constantly was picking at everything Marshall would say. It makes for lousy TV.

Love me some Steve Smith...hell, I even like Steven A. Smith. LOLOLOLOL!

LA guy....from the eastside...went to JuCo...Santa Monica...and looks like he turned in a HOF career. I bet he tells it like it is...cause he aint scared of shit.

Steve Smith is like Cortland Finnegan was. Huge shit talker on the field and on game day, but outside of that he's a class act. Don't judge people by only what you see on Sundays.

WOW. two big Mouths on TV at the same time, Smith and Irvin!! WOW!!

Almost stopped watching the video before the end and should have. Great wide receiver traits including body control, timing the ball, physical, toughness and speed. Intensity may be his best trait but, also could be his worse trait. NFLN has a lot of former players so he should fit in fine. I don't watch the channel or much pregame and post game stuff.
