I imagine he still has something left in the tank.

He was displeased with the level of playing time he got with the Steelers and I think we have the ability to remedy that without sacrificing time for someone like Samson, who I want to see more.

He would presumably be the 4th edge guy for us after Quinn, Barwin, and Ebukam.

EDIT: Forgot Longacre. Alright. 5th edge.

Dude looks old as F on film. But guys like him tend to elevate in the playoffs and he might have something left.

If the Rams have a serious issue with Matt Longacre's back & its possible he will go IR...then release Carlos Thompson now & sign this old battle scarred warhorse for his one last time playofff run! Rams may need him when we play in the NFC championship gm in Philly or Minn!

What I was thinking, if Longacre injury is an issue this is a good depth pickup at least. But the Patriots do seem like a team of fate for him to go to at this point. But stranger things have happened. Seems like a weird time for the Steelers to release him though. Wonder if he has some lingering injury issues or something that they wouldn't want to gamble with in the playoffs.

They cut him because he wanted more PT than they were willing to give.

Longacre hurt

I'd love to sign him just not sure we have enough snaps to make him want to come here. We'd be a similar situation as Pitt. He'd be great for a playoff push though.

Hell yeah I would sign him. James Harrison would do wonders for this young defense in the playoffs. Immediately steps in as one of the leaders too.

not sure

the Rams seemed to have developed some really good chemistry at this point

I'm not sure how bringing in an outsider at this point would go over

Longacre is out with a back.

I'd IR Longacre and put in a waiver for Harrison in a heartbeat. Backs don't heal after a week and I like Longacre for the long term.

But Heaven's YES, I'd take Harrison in a minute. AND, he's from a 3-4 so there'd be little learning curve.

Which makes no sense to me. He was productive setting the edge and collapsing the pocket. I always had his guy, usually the LT on roller skates.

Was he the fastest? Nope, but he had game speed and playing opposite Quinn with Brockers and AD in the middle, he'd be in a very enviable position to really do some damage in the playoffs.

I think they wanted to get their young guys time.

I guarantee you this, if the Rams sign a situational pass rusher for the playoffs, it would be DeMarcus Ware.

I’ve thought of that but there has been no mention of him even being interested in that. I know health issues are why he hung them up.

People seriously want him on our team? Why would they cut him right before the playoffs? Because he is not performing up to par. I'll keep who we have.

They cut him because their OLBs are playing more in coverage this year, and they have two young first round picks at the position. Harrison isn't the greatest fit at this point, and there's no reason to play him over the young guys. With his limited special teams value, he's ending up as an inactive. He can still contribute as a situational pass rushing 3-4 OLB imo.

They also cut him because he asked to be cut. He's nearing the end and wants to play.
