The Los Angeles Rams traded back from #87 to #89 before selecting TCU Horned FrogsOT Joseph Noteboom.

On its face, I absolutely loved the pick. General Manager Les Snead avoided the pitfall of the temptation of taking a linebacker of the immediacy of the need despite having adequacy at the position while adding a talent to groom for the future to replace either aging LT Andrew Whitworth or RT Rob Havenstein who is in his contract year.

Will Noteboom pan out? Time will tell. But at least the Rams didn’t handicap themselves with this one like certain picks of years past. The logic is sound. All that’s left is for the coaching staff to do their job, and to this point they’ve earned the benefit of the doubt.

Here’s what Lance Zierlein had to say in his scouting report at NFL dot com:

Noteboom flashes the technique, hand usage, and athleticism you want out of the position but he doesn’t do those things with enough consistency. His inability to gain and secure positioning as a move blocker is a concern as is his consistency as a finisher in running game. Noteboom was one of the tackles who flashed at the Senior Bowl in one-on-one drills and had a great workout at the Combine. The tape says day three, but his work during the “draft season” should get him drafted on the second day with a chance to become an early NFL starter.

Mocking the Draft’s Dan Kadar had Noteboom ranked as his #184 overall player, but I’m going to grade it out a bit higher:

Grade: A-

I think it was about the best choice we could make at that point. Not BPA, but we definitely at least addressed our team's glaring achilles heel. In those terms I give it an A.

Edit: and now i realize Train basically just said that ^

Every team needs a swing OT....fact was last year they did not have a legit swing OT. Rams went Williams as a LT back up & Lucas as the RT back up. This early season Rams did resign UDFA Micheal Dunn last season Practice Squad LT. Rams now have a legit talented swing LT prospect. JN closed his career with 40 consecutive starts, representing every game over his final three seasons. His first season started @ RT then the last two @ LT. Sure looks like a very solid selection.

Rams are looking into one serious event next season when three OL starters will enter into free agency & our starting LT will be several season passed normal retirement age, when he will be well into 37 yr old starting LT. Rams will a critical crisis in the salary cap with so many major stars looking to be paid mega $$$. I would expect a few more OL'er selected before today is done.

High b, but not a b-plus . Like 86 percent lol. If Noteboom becomes even an average left tackle then we got a serviceable blindside protector without using a premium pick. Most analysts agreed that he should be a starter in relatively short time. Don't be shocked if the Rams don't sign havenstein next year and go with whitworth and Noteboom , with Noteboom eventually taking over for whitworth

B+...There was an obvious need, they liked him at the Senior Bowl and Noteboom had a great combine. He has the length and the footwork plus his durability is an asset too. Overall I concur with @BonifayRam , the Los Angeles Rams needed a swing Tackle and they liked Noteboom from the outset.

I also like to factor in that Aaron Kromer liked this kid, he had other choices and wanted Notebook, so because of that too I rate it a B plus. Notebook needs to get stronger and become more consistent and I'm very confident under Kromer and Assistant Offensive Line Coach Andy Dickerson, he can become a bonafide starter.

I don't put any stock in draft grading. I do look forward to a positive training camp and preseason assessment though.

And I secretly hope that this guy likes studying his playbook more than rap lyrics.

Smart, athletic and has the size this means everything else is coaching and his ability to apply NFL coaching technique. if he can apply the nuances of Kroemers scheme to a real world game day situation he should at a minimum be an upgrade as a depth player with starter upside. seems low risk, I like his chances to be a solid backup.
