Steve Spagnuolo, Pepper Johnson to interview with Giants

A couple of familiar faces are among the candidates to be the next defensive coordinator for the Giants.

Steve Spagnuolo, who was the Giants’ defensive coordinator in 2007 and 2008, and Pepper Johnson, who was a Giants linebacker from 1986 to 1992, are both candidates for the job, according to the New York Post.

Spagnuolo has spent the last two years as a secondary coach and senior defensive assistant in Baltimore. In addition to working under Tom Coughlin as the Giants’ defensive coordinator, Spagnuolo has spent a year as defensive coordinator of the Saints and three years as head coach of the Rams.

Johnson was a member of two Super Bowl-winning Giants teams under Bill Parcells (Coughlin was wide receivers coach on one of those teams), and spent 14 seasons as an assistant to Bill Belichick in New England. Last year he decided to broaden his horizons and leave the Patriots to become defensive line coach in Buffalo.

Coughlin fired defensive coordinator Perry Fewell after a disappointing 2014 season. The next defensive coordinator hires will probably be the last, so this is a hiring Coughlin needs to get right.

I'm sure they would welcome him back. Not sure how he'll do without an elite defensive line this time around though.

Spags should and will never be a HC again because he's an overwrought control freak with a seemingly strange inferiority complex. Destined for failure in that role.

As a DC and defensive mind? He's better than a lot in the league.

Agree @Athos plus he works really well with Coughlin. It's a very good match.

Linehan is finding redemption... why not Spagnuolo?

I'm not into kicking guys who failed in STL... I'll always thank them for trying (being a head coach in the NFL is grueling, to say the least) and wish them well in future endeavors.

Glad to hear things are looking up for both ex-head coaches of the Rams.

The Giants’ new defensive coordinator is also the Giants’ old defensive coordinator.

Steve Spagnuolo, who was previously the Giants’ defensive coordinator from 2007 to 2008, is taking the job again, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News.

During Spagnuolo’s previous tenure as defensive coordinator, he was credited for helping to build the excellent pass rush that the Giants used on their way to winning Super Bowl XLII. He became the Rams’ head coach in 2009 and had an unsuccessful three years in St. Louis, and he’s been an assistant in Baltimore the last two years.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin fired defensive coordinator Perry Fewell after the season. Now Coughlin has a new coordinator he’s won with before.

Its been a long long long road to get back to just where he was before he came to St.Louis. Linny Hanny made it back more quickly to where he was. Jim Haslett went to Washington DC & is unemployed again. .......So glad Jeff Fisher is so stubborn like a mule just to hang in here with us as the Head Ram!(y).

I think Johnson did a pretty good job with that Buffalo D-Line this last year!

Good for him. Probably it's his best opportunity to regain his former level of success, and if he does, he might be talked about for a head coaching job again.
