I rewatched the condensed version of the Divisional playoff game in Philadelphia a couple of days ago. Today, I wanted to watch the actual version. I wanted to remember details of the game that I thought was well played, for the most part by the Rams. Full disclosure. I turned the sound off, except for the final drive, because I didn't want to listen to Collinsworth. I was correct. It was a well played game. There were mistakes like Kyren's fumble, Stafford's fumble (which doesn't seem to draw the same ire from Rams fans as Kyren's....understandably), Limmer's mistakes, bad drops by DRob, Higbee and Puka, missed blocks by Dotson, bad angles by Curl and Kinchens on TD runs by Barkley and Hurts, Gallimore not wrapping up Barkley when he had both arms on him. But any game is going to have mistakes. What I came away with from this rewatch is despite the weather being bad, despite the mistakes I mentioned, despite being down by 7 and then 13 in the 4th quarter, those boys fought back. Again and again.

The game was 16-15 going into the 3rd quarter, then 19-15 early in the 4th. We then went down 7 with 6 minutes left in the game and gave up another TD to go down 13. But these guys didn't throw in the towel. The Eagles, Siriani and their fans knew it. It was like a prize fighter hitting an opponent with everything he has and wondering, why isn't he going down? And our defense was YOUNG. After Kyren's fumble, the D stiffened and held them to 3. After Stafford's fumble they stiffened again and held them to 3. Sure they gave up 2 long Barkley runs and the first TD, a long run by Hurts but those 2 stops kept the game in reach. And lo and behold, Stafford performed some of his magic to get within 6 and then get within 15 yards of winning it with a masterful drive at the end. The false start by Dotson killed the momentum but there were enough mistakes to go around the entire squad. My point is despite all that, we were in position to win at the end. Some might say, that's the reasoning of a loser but I don't believe that. This team is battle tested and they're still young and talented. I will be extremely disappointed if they don't play in the Superbowl next February.

Some points I want to make, not to start any debates, just express an opinion. Speights played really well. I think we will be better at that position this year. Our cornerbacks played extremely well in that game. Which explains why management didn't go out and grab a couple of CBs. Kyren fumbled again but he did some really good things in that game. He was strong in pass pro. Very strong. He had runs of 30 and 20 yards. He had 2 runs of 20 yards or more all season and managed 2 in that game. He also had a 26 yard run vs Minnesota that was called back by a Whittington holding penalty. Despite fans desire for more speed at the RB position, KW has burst and can deliver long runs. He's not going to break off any 80 yard runs but they don't happen all that often league wide anyway. I think the RB room is fine and might be really good if Hunter can earn snaps. Whittington had a crucial catch in the 4th as did Tutu. And let me add one other thing. We have found our PK. But the thing I forgot completely about until I rewatched the game. Would the result have been the same if Fiske didn't go out after 3 snaps? We'll never know.

I can't blame that game on any one bad play which is usually the case. There was enough blame to go around but there was also plenty of resolve on both sides of the ball. We expect that from an offense led by Stafford but that defense was young and showed a lot of fight. Kudos to Shula and his boys. I think that sets us up to enter this season confident (as fans) to expect improvement on a squad that is already pretty damn good. Man, I can't wait for the games to start!!!

I'm very excited about this season. The team is well rounded and has talent everywhere. The DL/OLB will be the strength of the D, the ILB position will definitely be upgraded and the secondary has competition. The O has the pieces to beat you with the run or the pass. Health is the key as always.

I'm gonna toss in the cold weather.
The weather may have been the factor in the turnovers that game.

If the Rams want to go the distance and hoist that trophy next season:
GET HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE THROUGHOUT THE PLAYOFFS!

Simple things the Rams need to fix. Williams needs to fix his fumbling issues or he's gonna be riding the bench. He's a great RB but he would be elite if he didn't have issues holding on to the ball.
Oline communication is key this offseason, obvious health is a key contributor as well but that goes without saying. I have a feeling that's why they're bringing in Shelton, he knows the Rams scheme and if Limmer still has issues he'll find himself riding the bench. I'm looking forward to the camp battle.

WR's dropping the ball in a snow game doesn't bother me, it's not an element they generally play in so it's gonna be sloppy.

Williams will be fine. My hope is Corum contributes much more than last year and Hunter does more than the normal McVay rookie RB.

Here's the rushing leaders the last 2 years:

Henry 605 att / 3088 yds / 28 TDs
Barkley 592 att / 2967 yds / 24 TDs
Kyren 544 att / 2443 yds / 26 TDs
Bijan 518 att / 2432 yds / 18 TDs
Gibbs 432 att / 2357 yds / 26 TDs
Taylor 472 att / 2172 yds / 18 TDs
Jacobs 534 att / 2134 yds / 21 TDs
Cook 444 att / 2131 yds / 18 TDs
Conner 444 att / 2098 yds / 15 TDs
Hubbard 488 att / 2097 yds / 15 TDs
Pollard 512 att / 2084 yds / 11 TDs
Harris 518 att / 2078 yds / 14 TDs
Mixon 502 att / 2050 yds / 20 TDs

When you are among that group you have to be consider elite or near elite.

Wise decision.

Yeah - I'm always excited to see what we have going into the season. Last season definitely got off to a disappointing start. But it sure got exciting as the season wore on. I was oddly not crushed by the loss to the Beagles as I normally would be after any loss in a big game.

Now - this season, I'm hoping I'm not overly optimistic. With the off season moves, and how we finished the season, I really think we have a team that can win it all. And how much would that mean to the organization and fans to win it in Whiner stadium after winning the last one in our own stadium?

Go RAMS!!! Let's do this!

Not crushed by the loss? That is odd...you may need an appointment with a shrink. Something's not right with you!

More often than not, the team that makes the fewest mistakes win the game. The Rams showed how good they could be if they could just stop shooting themselves in the foot. They could have won it all.

I honestly think my expectations were lowered so much by the 1-4 start that wins became gravy. You gotta figure, we’ve seen that movie before. I was having flashbacks.

Yeah, when you're thinking "no playoffs this year" in early October and they make the dance, it is all gravy!!! Maybe that's the plan? They've done it two years running. :laugh2: Seriously, we're due for one of those starts McVay gave us the first two years he was here. 7-2 or better 11-1

Simple. Go win "the Super Bowl of the regular season," the 1-seed in the Conference. Rather than having an early season smorgasbord of stumbles and then having to claw ourselves back into a playoff position that leaves us in unenviable (Detroit, Philadelphia) Road venues.

He had the perfect play call. Higbee was wide open. Alas, the oline.

.
Yeah, Higbees defender fell down....it was likely a walk in TD....better yet for the Rams would have been tackled down about the one or inside....then make Philly burn their timeouts before you score.
Leaving Philly with the ball and some time....I would have just run stuff deep and checked down to Barkley in space. Given how the Rams issues went if he got past the DL.....
As a DC I would have also instructed LBs or whoever, if he is getting free in a route just pull him down, bear hug him or whatever.....give him the Faulk treatment in the Super Bowl.....dont let him beat you.
It was still a toss up if the Rams scored.

Seems like when we've earned a fast start, we always have a semi-deflating swoon somewhere near the middle of the season.

My hopes and expectations are to make the playoffs. Period. Don't care how we get there just want to be there.
McVays teams do seem to have a oct-nov sort of fade to them....except the ones that start badly enough they cant afford a November fade.
