The Rams have found their new kicker.

Sam Sloman, a seventh-round rookie out of Miami of Ohio, has won the team’s kicking competition, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Sloman had been competing in camp with former XFL kicker Austin MacGinnis and former CFL kicker Lirim Hajrullahu. None of the three kickers in Rams camp has ever kicked in a regular-season NFL game.

The Rams have had stability at kicker since drafting Greg Zuerlein in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL draft, but with Zuerlein now in Dallas, they needed a new kicker, and now they have him.

Personally, I’m shocked. I want to trust this isn’t financially driven. I want to believe there are solid reasons Sloman won the job and would love to hear those reasons. Fingers crossed
Lol not a big financial difference between the three players that this should even be brought up.

hahaha. im guessing all of the fans based their assumption on that one scrimmage. That’s such a tiny sample compared to what the coaches see. i knew something like this would happen.

Given the way H10 kicked in the scrimmages I'm sure it was a tough decision. But again kickers are fuckin weird. So here's hoping the Rams kept the right one. (y)

Also I'm sure one of the two cuts will be on the PS this year assuming both or one of them clear waivers.

Is CFL playing this year for Hallelulah?
Nope. From Wikipedia:

On August 17, 2020, the CFL announced that the 2020 season had been cancelled, citing the league's inability to obtain appropriate loans and subsidies from the federal government in order to cover operating costs and compensate for playing behind closed doors without paid ticketholders.

If it's a close call, you go with Sloman. He's the youngest of the three and theoretically should have the most improving to do as he gets older and gains experience. Here's hoping he's up to the task. I do know that he improved every year he was in college.

I can see this being a tad bit of surprise, but they kicked a lot of balls outside of those scrimmages. We have no insight on that.

The other thing we just don't know... what exactly are the coaches looking for?

One thing about Sloman is "his swing".

We have all played or watched golf and recognize a good swing when we see one... There may be a tad bit of projection with Sloman because of that, but this pick does not surprise me.

And... If right... We got Sloman for YEARS. That would be awesome.

Wait until he misses a game-winner under pressure or in bad weather outdoors. This is a huge surprise and the only draw back IMO to Lirim is his age. I think they will try to keep MacGinnis on the PS but not sure he will clear waivers. Lirim IMO will definitely get snatched up quickly as he had a lot of interest before signing with the Rams.

Sloman's kicking performance was only 7-13 which is typical for a rookie coming to the NFL. I would have thought the Rams would keep Lirim or Mac, especially MacGinnis who is 5 years younger. The problem with Lirim is his age with it being likely the Rams see only a single contract career out of him. In that regard, MacGinnis would seem the better option. Going 7-10, Sloman probably would have cleared waivers and not been poached while on the PS which is why IMO MacGinnis would have made the most logical long term choice.

I only hope Sloman doesn't have a meltdown as Youngho Koo did as a rookie. This is a huge gamble by Snead and McVay. Rookie kickers straight from college are notoriously unreliable. Let's hope Sloman doesn't follow that trend.
