Gotta be Carlos Santana if we're talking about lead/rhythm guitar.
Slash is a good one too of course.

Know who I used to like a lot? Steve Stevens.

That's on my phone.....love that one.

Never been a fan of Clapton.

Jimi Hendrix.
You either love it or you hate it it seems....thats too bad because he was a rare pioneer of the instrument itself and the evolution of music too.
Not to mention the blues and Jimi's thing for electifying it.

For me it comes down to the two Jimi/Jimmys. Hendrix and Page are both great in their own way. No one can bend a note to wrench the soul like Jimi Hendrix and no one has the groove of Jimmy Page. I give a slight edge to Hendrix.

I want to make a distinction between the greatest guitarist and the most skilled/technical guitarist. Going on skill neither Page or Hendrix are in the discussion IMO. You could be taking about Zappa, Buckethead, Satriani, and Van Halen

Buckethead is amazingly skilled. I had totally forgotten about him until you mentioned his name.

Surprised nobody mentioned Randy Rhoads.

X-Love the acoustic version better. He is bad ass.

Also always loved SRV, just love blues rock and he was the best IMO. Also big Satriani fan.

Some may not of heard of this guy but I think Joe Bonamassa is pretty bad ass also. He also had a pretty cool voice.

I'm partial to Johnny Lang...dig the whole vibe he lets loose....that man can make the strings sing.

the old rock bands, they're almost all loaded it seems, so it just depends on your flava. You throw Alex Lifeson into the conversation and I'm in.

Seriously thougb, there are just too many to mention for me. Marty Friedman is an amazing guitarist tho. As is Paul Gilbert... Just to name a couple.
