Just heard Mike Pierera (sp) on TNF. He stated the refs are instructed to call more holding calls as of this week. Techniques linemen are using that are illegal are now going to be called.
If true, this will be huge for AD.

*Instructed
Thread title mispelled

I'm not going to hold my breath. I have a feeling if anything happens, it'll be us getting screwed by holding calls while AD gets tackled over and over again without the refs even giving it a second glance.

yep, it will definitely only be on running plays so teams have to pass more.

I think the refs from the Lions game got that memo a week early. There were several holding calls on Lions OL trying to neutralize Donald last week. None of which looked any more flagrant than numerous other non-calls in previous weeks. The Donald Effect continues to scale new heights.

Rams have the best record in the league, have a potential league MVP in DT Aaron Donald, who also just happens to be the most held DT in the league and now the most watched team. Rams are playing games that are premier (no other games on). People have been noticing the blatant holding.

If Peira is right, timing couldn't be better for the Rams, and I don't think "OL technique" has anything to do with it. NFL doesn't want to get embarrassed.

If true, it's another example of the league, not just letting them play. They obviously had an reason to stop refs from calling holding and now they want them to call it. Hmm the NFL wants to win over the L.A. market. The Rams have the most dominant defensive player in the game, who is held on every play and is nearing the sack record. Could they be trying to ensure that Aaron gets the record and wins MVP? Donald will be breaking that record by 10 if he isn't held on every play.

Or are they tried of hearing conspiracy theories that are figuring out their meddling. Or, are they admitting a mistake. Or are they listening to the fans that want to see some defense every once in a while?

The big question is Why have a rulebook in the first place if the league is going to make changes on the fly? They change things every year and now they are doing it midseason. WTF.

I was in shock. Literally. I thought it was possible that the refs were just helping the Rams win.

It's been the same rules for a very long time, holding is easy to spot.
I think opposing coaches are simply instructing their players to hold AD.

Shaq was very hard to officiate and AD seems to be the same way. Lets see what happens and if the refs can man up and throw more flags even though the viewers hate it.

This is probably in response to all the hate from traditionalists about the "New NFL" everyone was hemming and hawing about after the Rams / Chefs game. Lol.. .

Wait... the NFL has instructed the refs to now call holding when an o-lineman HOLDS.

Makes you have to ask yourself what they were INSTRUCTED to do previously!

FFS

If they called all the holds the games would never end. All fans want are the blatant holds to be called.

Nothing's ticks us off more than refs missing blatant holds and then calling ticky tack holds or non holds. Case in point a call yesterday against the jags where fournette ran for a 1st down. They called it on flowers and the replay showed a text book block and nothing else stood out either. How they call that and don't call all the choke holds is what causes frustration.

I think those blatant holds that were let go for the Rams down years was what wrecked Robert Quinn’s back.

Some say that the O line holding hasn’t been called because too many penalties slows the game.

Others think it was too boost offensive scoring to please fantasy fans.

I don’t know which it was but it slowly was called less and less over the last few years. This year it’s been as blatant as ever. Sure the rules never changed but they’ve been ignored for a long time.

NFL powers that be figure its not in their best interest to showcase the leading candidate for league MVP getting horse collard and held almost every play. Time to nip that in the bud before playoff time.

And its not just AD. OL holding (due to it not being called) is rampant in the NFL.

Selassie makes a good point. What were they instructed before the season started?

Sounds to me like they had an agenda and instructions to officials to get more scoring.

Yeah, agree with everyone that this is stupid for them to be changing their minds constantly about how rules should be handled. NFL has a real issue. This would obviously benefit AD a lot. But while the constant non-holding calls are annoying the biggest gripe I always have is how they seemingly call nothing a whole game and then suddenly WHAM, holding call on a key drive in the 4th quarter the completely effects a team negatively. Hate refs that do that. Don't be nitpicking assholes the whole game and then throw a game changing flag when it matters most for something both teams have been doing for 50 minutes already. Frustrating.

But if this is true, I look forward to AD breaking the sack record.
