Rams working out kickers Wednesday, including Mason Crosby

After cutting Brett Maher on Tuesday, the Los Angeles Rams signed Lucas Havrisik off the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad. However, they’re not done exploring their options at kicker.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the Rams are working out a group of kickers on Wednesday, which includes veteran Mason Crosby. It’s unlikely the Rams will sign a second kicker to their active roster, but adding one to the practice squad is certainly an option and potentially the route they’ll go.

It’s unclear which other kickers are working out for the Rams on Wednesday, or how many will be giving it a shot, but it’s good to see the team exploring other candidates.




Maher went just 17-for-23 on field goals this season, missing two on Sunday alone – as well as an extra point attempt just before halftime. Havrisik has never kicked in a regular-season game and was just 34-for-53 in college, so he’s not the most experienced or accurate kicker, either.

The Rams let Matt Gay walk in free agency this offseason and while he’s been a stud in Indianapolis, Sean McVay and Les Snead are still searching for a replacement.

If they sign one of the kickers they are working out, like Henderson, they will add them to the practice squad and they can activate them on game day. Thus going with a veteran like Crosby over Havrisik, thus in 3 weeks swapping them out and moving Havrisik to the practice squad and signing Crosby to the active roster. Stay tuned.

So they have to add Havrisik to the roster for three weeks since they took from another teams practice squad, correct?

Can they just give him back if another kicker looks much better than Havrisik does?

Correct, but if they do sign Crosby, they could sign him to the practice squad and have him active for 3 consecutive weeks before signing him to the active roster. That way, they could cut Havrisik and add him to their practice squad, taking a back door approach and getting a young kicker they might want for next year.

Yeah, I think the plan though is to keep him so they can add him to their practice squad. The old Do-si-do if you will.

So Maher went 17 for 23 which is about 74%. My question is what is an acceptable percentage in today's NFL?
I seem to recall that Bill Parcells said it was 75% but then that was decades ago iirc.

I don’t know for sure but I’d say that guys like Tucker have raised the bar. Kickers seem to be more accurate and have stronger legs than in Parcell’s days. Which makes sense with advancements in the sport.

It is peculiar that Havrisik was so bad in college but now is considered to have a future in the league. Was his collegiate guidance on how to kick really that incompetent? It’s not like he went to a small school like Kutztown.

Justin Tucker's is 90% IMO, 85 or above is very good and in the 90's is exceptional. Crosby is 39, but his percentage overall is 86%. I would be interested to see who the other kickers are though.

He was their long kicker and kickoff specialist so most of his kicks in college were beyond 50 yards. Also his best year in 2020 albeit a small sample size was 90% and that was they year he worked with Rams Assistant Special Teams Coach Jeremy Springer.

SO IMO, Springer sees the upside, however, I do think the Rams will sign a veteran for the rest of they year with hope of stashing Havrisik on their practice squad.

Its a great question, Included in that 17 for 23 was 3 for 7 from 50+
88% inside 50
7 50+ yard kicks in just 7 games? Matt Gay only had to kick between 5-9 50 yarders all season
So I guess the real question I have is, why cant they sustain drives better so they're not relying on kicks that historically are not easy to make

I dunno if it was the misses or that he outright had two shanks in two games and thus really didn’t inspire confidence. Missing by a little is one thing. Shanking big hooks is quite another.

Rams aree working him out. He's exactly the kind of kicker they should be looking at right now. He's pretty much money inside the 50. They can get Evans to practice long range kicks outside of 50. He only missed 3 kicks last year and two were beyond 50 yds. I bet he gets signed to the pracitice squad as insurance against the guy they signed not working out.
