Yeah, I'm a little shocked by this. I know he hadn't put up big numbers before, but he really stepped up in the playoffs last year when he was needed and I thought he was ascending. Wonder if he's hurt or just had a bad camp.

I think he got worked pretty bad last night on a block but I can't remember the specific player. Seems like a good guy and he'll get a job somewhere pretty quick IMO.

They just finally gave up on Blanton because they have somebody else that they think they can actually develop out.

That would be my guess.

Yeah that leaves the Rams thin at TE, at least having TEs with NFL game experience. Do they have their eyes on the waiver wire? Did Blanton do something to have the staff lose faith? Is Jacob Harris going to get more time at TE?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Blanton is a JAG and only played out of desperation. He was a terrible blocker. On hte bright side, he's waived early enough that he might be able to hook up with another team or will end up back with the Rams on PS

Interesting.

I’ve pointed out.. he can’t block.

Hopkins is light years better in the pass game.
Wonder if they’re bringing someone in or promoting someone.
If Hopkins was light years better he would have gotten on the field before hum last year

Blanton will be picked up IMO. He's never had a high ceiling and his limitations are evident. The Rams did him a favor by releasing him early. Ragas probably makes the PS.

IMO Blanton's release wasn't a surprise to me. I think Roger Carter is a better blocker, better on STs and would fill the role of Mundt. It would be interesting to see if they use him as a lead blocker on run plays, i.e. H-Back.

Definite surprise. The argument that was being made for the 53 was you could keep just 3 TE's due to Harris position flexibility and ST play really making it like 4. Boy, does make you wonder if Carter has really impressed. Hard to think they keep just two on the active roster. Hard to believe they like someone else that's out there somewhere better than Blanton and his knowledge of our system.

There was talk from Jourdan that Hopkins had taken another step so far in TC.

Interesting point by @oldnotdead, they could be doing him a favor by releasing him early but with the knowledge that they'd welcome him back to the practice squad.

I don't think we're going to miss his production too much.

4 receptions for 37 yards?

I think we'll be all right.
5 receptions for 57 yards against the Niners in the NFC Championship Game after Higbee went down was HUGE. Included the biggest gain on the TD drive that pulled the Rams to within three; and a third down catch on the FG drive that tied the score.

Agree that the Rams must see his limitations, and prefer other options; and it’s not an earth shattering move. However, I also believe Blanton stepping up in the Niners game; and Hopkins stepping up in the Super Bowl were essential to the Rams winning their 2nd Lombardi.
