In today’s instant info, I heard the flight number of the plane within minutes. How horrific for a family member to see the video almost instantly. Damn, we have a different world now.

I know statistically its safer flying than driving. But dang, after hearing there's been an increase last year in near misses, I think I'd rather take my chances driving.

Terrible tragedy

Sounds like air traffic control sent the jet to a different runway than it was supposed to land on. This sent them to a different trajectory which is where the military blackhawks flight. Air traffic asked the blackhawk if they could see the jet and with several in the sky and not looking for the other runway responded they could but it wasn't the jet they were being asked.

Granted this is all early but it sounds like a tragic mistake/miscommunication.

I read that for every 100,000 hours of flying that only 6.8 hours have any kind of emergency at all.

I'm no expert... But, WTH is a Blackhawk doing flying around the flight path of an active runway?? Who thought that was a good idea??

It's actually pretty common for military and commercial aircraft to share runways. When they built the international airport in Charleston South Carolina they just built a terminal and use the Air Force Base runways

Condolences to all of the families. Just a terrible tragedy.

Reagan National is a terrible airport IMO. I hate when I have to fly into or out of there. Much prefer BWI or Dulles.

Tell me about it.
Some stupid unnamed airline one time gave me a 20 minute layover when my connecting flight was on the other end of the airport. Of course I had no chance of making that. Then the airline refused to give me a room even though the next connecting flight was 7:30 in the morning. They literally thought I was going to spend 10 hours in that damn place and sleep upright in a fiberglass chair. I kept asking for their supervisor and then the supervisor of the supervisor finally got me a room. Unreal. :)

Jeez, talk about a rough week. A smaller Leer Jet crashed in Philadelphia near a mall. So far they're saying two fatalities. But there's reports of six people killed. A medical flight with two pilots, two doctors, a patient and family member. That really sucks.

Tough news. Its being reported the patient was a young girl from Mexico who had some sort of life saving treatment or surgery in Miami. They go through all that to save the young girl's life and this happens.
