I did not see the game today but followed it as much as possible on my I-Pad and it sure seemed like there were a LOT of Very Questionable calls by the Officials against the Rams?! I am just curious if anyone knows if NFL Officials get graded on a Game by Game basis (I am ASSUMING they Do?!) and IF they do are they held accountable? Just seems like the Rams get more than their share of Questionable/Poor Officiating!

This is what you get when you have a Commissioner that has mouse balls.

There was a chance to help the bad ref situation and he let the fans and media beat him.

And a few years later we are in the same situation.

This is on Goodell and the piece of shit refs union.

Mostly Goodell because the replacement refs weren't worse.

Lesson learned doubtfully.

They are privately graded by the Refs/ NFL and scored.

Poor grades can prevent promotion and for head refs, prevent getting any post-season games.

Considering the poor quality of overall refereeing, seems they’re grading on a curve.

What’s truly frustrating is that the refs often get calls so mind-blowingly right that when they get calls really obviously wrong where the benefit seems to fit a narrative, the integrity of the game is undermined.

But, yes, each official and the crews as a unit are graded.

Some questionable calls once again, two weeks in a row, hoping next week it changes as seems that officials the last two weeks cannot spot the ball and it was clear push off by Sutton and not only did they miss that call, but then called Joyner for unsportsmanlike which was just outrageous.

I don't think the foul against joiner there was terrible. I could definitely see calling that receiver defenseless, he also pretty much got the guy right on the head. It wasn't nearly as clear as the hit on Cooks, in my opinion, but I can't complain too much.

After KC loses, I fully expect next week to be worse...

They’ll make it a battle of coaches with tons of non-calls on holds.

Presuming we win, the home game against the Packers looks bad as far as the refs...

That said, I have faith in McVay and crew

Bad calls exist and presumably should go both ways. That is unfortunately part of the game. Does this forum really think officiating crews purposefully tilt their calls (or are instructed to tilt their calls) towards one team over another?

It's plausible

"This forum" is at least 2 people (I'm me, you're you; either one of us could be all the rest of us) and we rarely, if ever, all agree on any one subject. However, I think the circumstantial evidence is piled up so high on the side of there being a narrative that the refs are instructed to help along that's it's hard for me not to seriously consider it.

@Angry Ram chooses to disbelieve. I think there's another as well.

You are correct. These are the best refs the world has to offer. It is very hard to see things at the speed of the NFL. I officiate High School and semi-pro ball. The constant evaluation, constant correction at that semi pro level wears me out. I lose sleep over the missed calls and bad calls I make. I have friends at all levels of college and I know Division 1 college and NFL is off the charts as far as evaluation goes. It's a pressure cooker and they want nothing more than to make the correct call on every play.

There is also rules vs. philosophy. A lot of times fans see a rule broken but by philosophy we don't call it. That's a whole other discussion.

I absolutely believe that NFL referees have an agenda to make calls in games to help it become more competitive. Specifically in the 2nd half and late in games when "they" don't want tv viewers tuning out to a blowout.

Basically, the team with a lead late in games is getting "ticky tacked" to death and sometimes suffering from flat out bad calls.

I heard a stat today about a record number of overtime games this year through 6 weeks and its not even close to the norm...or something like that. I'll try to find it.

Philosophies like "we must keep divisional games close" and "the Rams don't play well in the cold". We hear you.

I know you said that's another discussion, but I'm not seeing how a philosophy is relevant. Was the rule broken? Call the penalty. Was it not broken? Don't call it. Seems like interjecting your personal philosophy is exactly what fans would complain about. At least if it's always called by the rule, fans can accept that. When giving one team a penalty is against your personal philosophy, that's going to piss someone off.

From time to time and situationally, yes.

We already have the tons of no calls on holds

I think in a league that pounds their chests and screams "no excuses" or "next man up" or whatever, that complaining about refs is petty. Every team is gonna get calls for and against them. Man up and overcome them if it's the latter. #noexecusesamiright. Like the Rams have been doing.

I think giving up chunks of yards or being an idiot and getting a PF is more of indictment of your team, rather than the refs.

I'm all about taking responsibility for your own actions, taking responsibility to not put yourself in that situation, etc. However, some things are beyond your control. One bad call is one thing. Ten bad calls are another.

The ability of an official to favor a team and change a game is real.

Can/should teams overcome that when it happens? Sure.

Should they have to? No.

Refs:

The good:

called correct taunting on them
called correct horsecollar on them
called a few correct offensive holdings on them

the so-so:

called PI on them in endzone, looked kinda ticky-tack (I'm not complaining)

The bad:

questionable PI on us when ball was tipped by Donald
PI on us with uncatchable ball (he never would've got his feet down)
questionable facemask penalty on us
gave Gurley another bad (Seahawk) spot when he dived for 1st down
questionable PF on Joyner... he was going for the body and receiver ducked his head into the hit
bogus offsides call on us when their guy jumped at same time

- overall I thought they sucked
