Is Josh Jacobs just making this up?

The NFL has issued a response to the talk that players need to be concerned for their safety when the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers face off in Brazil later this year.

The Eagles will “host” Green Bay on Sept. 6 at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil. Packers running back Josh Jacobs discussed the game during an appearance on the latest episode of the “Green Light with Chris Long” podcast, which was released on Thursday.

When asked what he is most excited about for the game in Brazil, Jacobs expressed some serious concerns. The two-time Pro Bowl back said the NFL has warned players not to wear green in São Paulo due to the color’s significance to local gangs.

Jacobs also indicated that players will be told not to leave their team hotels and could be accompanied by armored vehicles when they need to. You can read the full comments here.

On Friday, the league issued a response and essentially denied everything that Jacobs said. NFL spokesperson Michael Signora told Jeff Neiburg of the Philadelphia Inquirer that “you will see a stadium full of fans wearing the green of the Eagles and the green of the Packers.” Signora also said Jacobs’ claims about armored vehicles were “not true.”

There had already been talk that the Eagles and Packers might not wear green for the Brazil game, but that was for a reason that had nothing to do with local gangs. Either way, green is the primary color of both franchises, so there will be plenty of green in and around the stadium.

I am dubious regarding the NFL’s response as I’ve seen non-NFL media wondering what the NFL would do about the green color due to the connection to a local gang… it included pics of past issues including the military being there and some large number of shirtless angry tatted out dudes engaging them

I think it is good for the player subculture to see some of these South American countries. Get a good feel for things and how they can get. It is very easy for young people to misunderstand the ease with which life is lived in the States, and start thinking it is like that everywhere. Perspective is never a bad thing.

Players? What about any fans that go to that game? They can't wear green I guess?

I think you'd be ok in a Philly or Fudgepacker jersey. Not like the gangs can't tell it's an NFL jersey. What sucks is that the clubs will be off limits with all that fine ass. But I'm sure there will be order in options for the players.

Not a fan of this Brazil game. One of these days something isn’t going to go as planned with these international games.
I know they are trying to expand the NFL brand around the World, but I don't understand the logistics of inter-conference games where it makes sense. If the Brazil game is a success and the Germany game is as well, where does that leave you? Increased jersey sales, I guess, but are we really going to have the Rams go play a game in Brazil and in seven days, in Germany, followed by a game in Miami? Unless there is a complete division in South America and one in Europe, I can't see how that works.

If the NFL would make changes and work to promote and gain more fans here their time would be better spent. These games in Europe and South America only turn domestic fans off.

The jersey doesn’t matter when a gang cares about colors. You don’t wear a blue jersey in Bloods territory, even if you’re just a fan of the team.

And realistically, I doubt the gangs in foreign country know much about American football

You'd be surprised how steeped other countries are in American culture. Fact is our culture is our #1 export. I realized this early in my naval career when we would pull into some podunk port backwater in nowhere and the clubs would be bumping US beats and popular music of the time. And it has only increased if anything in this social media age. The world is shrinking in that regard.

I don't think people realize how powerful this is. The US sorting our shit with racism for example has driven ripples through sports worldwide. It's kind of crazy.

Just saying the jersey thing is probably being overplayed. Brazil is different now than last time I was there. But gang members are not stupid, they'll know Americans when they see them rolling around town in their ugly ass Eagles gear.

It's already happened, although in maybe a different way than you're thinking. The 2018 Mexico City game that had to be cancelled because of the field condition. We lost airfare money on that game. In the end though it was better to see the game that resulted from that debacle. The epic MNF Chiefs vs. Rams game.
