My wife got a Job recently at John Hopkins in St Petes. I know a few of you live in Florida and I have met some of you at tailgates. Any advice? Lived in Arkansas all my life. She starts June 30th and is already down there staying with her parents now. I am trying to sell the house and then I will be right behind her... But I don't have a Job waiting on me so I have no clue what I'm going to be doing. Kinda scary and exciting at the same time. I do know I love deep sea fishing so I'll get to do plenty of that from now on!

Lots of retired peeps and snow birds live in and around St Pete. Makes for being surrounded by slow and shitty drivers. There are many transplants living over there so you won't be the only one.

The Gulf beaches are beautiful but there are no waves basically. The Gulf is more like a lake. For fishing, you'll want to do what's called In-Shore fishing on that side of the state. Fish like Snook, Redfish, and Trout are your best options there and they live close to the shore lines. The deep sea fishing over there consists basically of going WTF out in the Gulf and bottom fishing for grouper... you won't be targeting Pelagic fish in the Gulf. That kind of deep sea fishing has to be done on my side of the state out in the Atlantic.

Get ready for a steam bath... it's hotter than hell right now with 200% humidity.

I know a couple of people that have moved to Florida (from out west), both enjoy it.
I am afraid of gators.

The tourists and snow birds are way more dangerous.

Gators are just overgrown frogs that normally have the mindset of a stoner who just smoked an entire ounce of Indica.

Crocs on the other hand are killers... totally different. Good thing those only live in deep South Florida. You rarely run into them on accident. Everyone knows where they have been known to live down there. There's a boat ramp near Miami that has a 16 footer that is always there. I'll try and find a video of him for you. Those should always be feared and respected. They are 100% different from dumb gators.

I have no doubt that is true....but, I don't like any of them....and Ive never seen one out in the wild and Ive never lived anywhere remotely near where they are.
So, its a totally irrational thing, but.....

I get it. They look like killers and some are HUGE.

I've always been around them. I used to use drive my dirt bike over them like they were speed bumps as a kid. A bunch would line up on the sand next to a lake by our orange groove. I would try and run over as many as possible before they'd all run back into the water. They reacted so slow at times that I was able to run over as many as 6 in one pass. It didn't hurt them... it just scared the shit out of them. My dumbass wiped out 2 different times doing this... one of them ended with me landing on top of 2 gators. They didn't bite me luckily, they just wanted to escape back into the water.

Dogs are completely unsafe if gators are present. Gators love to eat them so you have to be very careful about that. Gators will climb a 6 foot chain link fence to eat a dog with absolutely no problem.

Climbing fences and all that....we are screwed when they learn to drive.
Glassy eyed dinosaurs.
Ive run into bears plenty of times while hiking/camping. Not my favorite thing, but, way more freaked out by giant killer lizards.
Probably nothing more that what one is used to being around.
I would assume most of the people getting into trouble with them are new movers to the area or tourists?

Or just idiots. Honestly... the idiot factor is almost always involved.

Gators are in every body of water down here. It is very rare to hear about a human being killed by one. They are not out there hunting humans. When an attack does happen, many times the gator is sick or injured... or there was a dog near the person.

So, people will go swimming in bodies of water with those monsters?

Of course, I would so swimming in the ocean growing up on the west coast. Body surfing, surfing, swimming.....swimming at night etc.
I guess it is maybe what you grew up around?
