The Broncos are out of the playoffs for the second consecutive year, and head coach Vance Joseph is on the hot seat. And now a very surprising name has been floated as a potential replacement: Mike Shanahan.

Shanahan, of course, won two Super Bowls with the Broncos, when Broncos General Manager John Elway was his quarterback. And Elway reportedly considered firing Joseph after last season, and hiring Shanahan to replace him.

Longtime Denver sports columnist Woody Paige reported that Elway and Shanahan met a year ago to discuss the possibility of Shanahan returning to the sideline. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that he heard the same.

Standing in the way was Broncos CEO Joe Ellis, who said if Elway was going to move on from Joseph, he needed to conduct a full coaching search, and not just hand the job to Shanahan. (Elway would have to interview a minority before hiring Shanahan to comply with the Rooney Rule.) Elway eventually came around to giving Joseph a second year in Denver.

But now that Joseph’s second year has ended out of the playoffs, the Broncos may be ready for a new head coach. Could Shanahan be the guy? It’s entirely possible. The 66-year-old Shanahan has said he would like to coach again, if he finds the right situation.

Elway is likely to begin conducting another coaching search in two weeks. Shanahan may be on his list of candidates.

Hopefully Mike has gotten his blood pressure meds adjusted since the last time he was coaching... his face was always flaming red. It looked like he was ready to stroke out at any minute.

Talk about a retread though. I gotta believe that the Horse Toothed Jackass can find a much better candidate than that old dinosaur.

That would be a mistake IMHO....Elway really showcasing he doesn't have a clue. Much better options out there IMHO and some collegiate coaches too. Let's not forget that Mike Shanahan's final 4 years of being Head Coach in Washington his record was....6-10, 5-11, 10-6 & 3-13.

In related news, the NFL has announced that Terrell Davis has applied for reinstatement from retirement.

I'm not a big Shanny fan, but those are all on Snyder imo. It almost felt like RGme was calling the shots for a while there. It was no secret that Shanny didn't want him as his QB either. It was a total mess

Okay, but Shanny took the job knowing the dynamics. Overall, it just didn't work out, but history has shown us when a former Head Coach goes back for a part deux, the squeal is never as good as the original...Here is a list:

  1. George Allen...Los Angeles Rams...Fired after two preseason games
  2. Chuck Knox....Los Angeles Rams...Best record 92-94 6-10.
  3. Joe Gibbs...Washington Redskins...Not close to winning several Super Bowls
  4. Art Shell...Oakland Raiders...Total Disaster
  5. Marion Campbell...Atlanta Falcons....Bad both times around.
  6. Wally Lemm...Houston Oilers....AFL Champions first go around, not so good second time around.

How the hell do you get fired after 2 pre season games? Did our owner catch George Allen going to town on his wife or wth?

Broncos need to go get a damn QB first off. But yes I do think his last HC hire was uninspired and it will need to be rectified, as pairing a defensive head coach with a young QB isn't an optimal deal. With that setup if they do find a guy who gets a good season out of the young QB he's going to be hired away. So suck it up and make the change and bring in a head coach who can cover the offense plus QB development.

Of course I dislike the Broncos and their spoiled @$$ ridiculous orange-wearing fan base so hope that doesn't happen. :p

True Story....
Rams Fire Allen

Gorge Allen who coached the Los Angeles Rams for the first two preseason games, has been fired and replaced by offensive coordinator Ray Malavasi, the team's owner, Carroll Rosenbloom announced last night.

Allen, hired to replace Chuck Knox as the Rams' coach last February, had lost both preseason games, 14-7 to New England in the opener and 17-0 to San Diego Saturday.

"It is my feeling that I have made a serious error in judgment in believing George Allen could work within our framework," Rosenbloom said in a prepared statement. "It has been extremely difficult for him to adjust to a new situation.

"Unquestionably he is a fine coach and administrator. His record speaks for itself. However, I'm certain it's in the best interest of all concerned to make this change at this time."

The Rams' training camp has been marked by grumbling from several players over Allen's long practices, and several key players have not taken part in some of the workouts.

Allen was fired by the Washington Redskins last January after he and team President Edward Bennett Williams couldn't agree on a new contract.

Although Allen had a 67-30-1 record in Washington, making him the most successful coach in the Redskins' history, the major hitch in his signing a new contract here was Williams' desire to have more say in the team's financial matters and personnel.

When Allen remained adamant in wanting to maintain the status quo, he was fire and Jack Pardee hired as coach.

Allen, 56, had been the Rams' coach earlier, guiding the team for five seasons from 1966 to 1970. He was fired by the club's president, the late Dan Reeves, and went to Washington.

den,
I don't know if you remember this but I distinctly recall that it was rumored that Coach Allen was showing signs of mental instability during his last days with the Rams. One specific incident was the time he complained that there were no pats of butter on both sides of the food line in the cafeteria the Rams used at Cal State Fullerton.
Apparently one side of the food bar had pats of butter and the other didn't.

Well,if you know George and what a stickler for detail he was, this was totally intolerable and he made a stink about it. At any rate this issue got the attention of Mr. Rosenbloom and it wasn't too long after that George Allen was relieved of his duties.
To be honest I don't know how much the above mentioned incident contributed to his demise but there were questions about him acting somewhat unhinged and this may have been the final straw for ownership.

Just a walk down memory lane fellow Rammies!!

Corbin,
Carroll Rosenbloom was the best owner we have ever had. I've said it for years that when he went down in the ocean (sadly) he took the entire Ram organization with him.
And I said this BEFORE Hillary......er ....Georgia F. took over.
Hopefully we'll all look back and say that Mr. Kroenke is the best owner for the Rams but as of now the jury is still out.

I'm not so sure about that, but I do believe Allen was just that way...He asked Pat Haden to pick up a hot dog wrapper that was blowing around the practice field and that got Haden upset, but Allen believed keeping things neat and orderly, it was compulsive that way. Carroll Rosenbloom (CR) and Allen did not mesh well and Rosenbloom had told Georgia the biggest mistake he made was letting Chuck Knox go, but I believe his biggest mistake was not hiring Bill Walsh over George Allen, to what could have been.

Anyway, Allen went on to coach in the USFL with the Chicago Blitz and Arizona Wranglers so I'm thinking, that was just his way and Allen was only 56 back in 1978, so not that old.

BTW....Had me gut laughing comparing Georgia to Hillary.....Awesome!

I wonder if Shanahan would try and coax John Elway out of retirement.
Wonder what he's up to these days

Vermeil was 61 years old coming off a 15 year break. Exception to the rule.
