OK, we likely have too many threads on this, but in re-watching the game there was one play that perfectly demonstrates who he is, and why he is so important to this team.

After the easy interception is dropped, that for all intents and purposes would have ended the game and their season, THE VERY NEXT PLAY he throws a 30-yd dime to OBJ (who predictably gets cheapshotted for 15 more yards)...

The STONES on this guy are legendary. Bad pass? F it. Watch this one. BAM!

Mods, merge if you like, but I'm so pumped I had to post this separately.

There was 9 mins left in the game when Tardtt dropped that punt. Not necessarily a game ender.

Agree with the sentiment though. Keep firing baby!!
Ya I'm thinking we give them the 3-and-out, they burn a little more time off the clock & so Gay's FG becomes a game winner at 0:00 on the clock. I don't think it would've made a difference, we were GOING to win this game. edit: I will add tho, to your OP, that I can only say that because Matty "stones" Stafford is on our team now. An INT at that point would've crushed 16.

You have too compliment the coach to. For calling that after seeing what just happened. If Goff does that. The coach would not have called that play. Coach totally trust Stafford.

I could here the OMFG’s all the way here in MT when he threw that punt on first down he seems to recover well that’s for sure.

This slams the door on people who downplay the importance of a supporting cast.

But not just WRs, OL, RBs - coaches, trainers, the defense, special teams, team leadership, and probably above all else - culture.

It's so obvious and so stupid, yet fans have argued for W/L being tied to a QB. It's over and done with after this, except for those who will ignore that Stafford has been apart of three playoff games - all wins, and been apart of defeating five teams with 10 wins.

He has experienced more success in one season with us than he did the whole of his Lions career.

And man did some of us know that would happen.

Yes... but it still would have been better-- much, much, better-- not to have thrown the ball to Tartt to begin with.

We cant have it both ways man, that's what I realized. Stafford has a lot of Favre in him. He's just a gunslinger who has confidence in his arm to a degree most cant comprehend. He knows he can make every throw, and he wants to make the difficult throws. Thats the difference.

Dan Orlovsky highlighted this right after the trade went down a year ago- he said back in his Detroit days they were in a meeting in the QB room looking at some film of Stafford, and on a certain play there were two wide open WRs for intermediate gains, yet Stafford threw a 50 yard bomb into a tiny window for a competition. And Orlovsky asked him "dude wtf, why would you risk that throw when there's an obviously easier, safer throw for a guaranteed completion?" And Stafford replied, "because guys like you cant make that throw Dan." To me that just showed his mindset and how he feels he can attack defenses with his arm. Will it always work? No it wont, that gunslinger mentality will lead to INTs occasionally but that's just how this dude is wired.

I would like to see us have it both ways.

I see no reason why Stafford, together with McVay, can't get better. Limit mistakes. Perfect his game. He is an elite QB in terms of skills. He can and should be an elite QB in terms of execution too. That's how the Rams win multiple Super Bowls.

That's the most freaking cold and ruthless answer I've ever heard. I love it.

I think McVay has tried to coach some of that out of him. Remember in Detroit for over a decade they didn't win unless Stafford had huge games and made all the throws. He knew he had to be aggressive and lead them to wins or they would lose. Coming to a team like the Rams, I agree he doesn't need to take ALL the risks but that's hard to do IMO when it's part of your DNA. The only QB I've ever seen be that aggressive and attack all the difficult throws while not turning the ball over is Aaron Rodgers. He's the only one, just an anomaly. But then look at what people say about him performing in the clutch or in big games. There's no coincidence that Stafford has lead more 4th qtr and OT comebacks than any other QB, it's because he's never scared and tries to make every throw. Maybe there is a slightly better balance for Stafford to settle into, but we're never going to see careful, safe, reserved QB play from him. It's not who he is and not who McVay is.

Without a doubt. Which is what a coach should be doing. Controlling the approach, the way the QB attacks the defense, to maximize the return.

I loved that Orlovsky quote by the way. I don't recall reading that one so thanks for mentioning it.

Working the "hero ball approach" out of Stafford was undoubtedly on the list and something the Rams were aware of. He's never had to play within a scheme (like it is now with McVay), for 14 years or whatever it was in Detroit. Now he's got a coach conditioning him to do that. It's to his best interest because if he can control that there is no reason why he can't put together a fine collection of seasons with McVay from his 33rd to his 40th year.

What I really like about McVay is he values that competitive fire. So he's not crushing his QB and killing it. He's slowly trying to bring a greater QB out of 9. And it looks like it's working. One more big win to go and 9 is on his way and we're following right behind on what's gonna be one big ass bandwagon. :laugh1:

I hope to be wrong, but I get the feeling that with the beating that dude takes, he's not making it to 40. I feel like there's at least one or two times per game where I start getting very worried because he's getting up slowly and grimacing or limping. :wow2:

He did that shit a lot more with the Lions. Had his shoulder separated or whatever. Back issues. So yeah he's got a lot of mileage.

But he looks good, moves well, and is growing in this offense. I'll bet you he does a lot of damage of his own in the years ahead in horns.
