Lions defend low hit that injured Tyler Higbee as how the NFL tells them to tackle

Published January 15, 2024 10:27 AM

Rams tight end Tyler Higbee suffered what is believed to be a serious knee injury when he took a low hit from Lions safety Kerby Joseph on Sunday night, and Joseph has taken some criticism for going low. But Joseph and his teammates say going low is exactly what the league office has instructed players to do in its quest to reduce concussions.
Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone wrote on social media, “It’s how the league office asks us to tackle.”
Anzalone added that Matthew Stafford shouldn’t have left his receiver reaching for a pass over the middle and exposing his body like that.
“My point is that it’s a legal hit,” Anzalone wrote. “It’s a dangerous, violent sport. It’s legal to cut block DEs full speed while he’s blinded on run plays. The QB should know not the throw this ball and protect his own player. And like I said, I do not want anyone to get hurt out there.”
Lions safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson echoed that.

“If anybody on the Rams feel like it was dirty, well tell his quarterback don’t put the ball in a place where he gets his player hurt,” Gardner-Johnson said, via ClickonDetroit.com.
Joseph wrote on social media, “I’m praying for bro and his family I don’t have no intention to hurt no body and or harm their career.”
It was an unfortunate injury, but not an intentional one.

They are justifying hitting someone low as a payback to the league. Yes, I understand the league is fucking idiotic but don’t be tackling with a good chance to not just hurt but maybe end your fellow players career. SMH

Go fuck yourselves you fucking jerkoffs. Hit him on the thigh like you're supposed to. Nobody wants you to attack the knee. Fucking cocks.

yea that game showed that the Lions are dirty as fuck. The non roughing the passer call was probably the most egregious....so fucking bad.

Takes a lot to go from a team I root for to a team vying to be my 4th least favorite but they accomplished that.

I feel like the whole Lions organisation doesn’t know how to win. Dirty hits and talking shit - no doubt they will get a reality check

I guess it will come down to the dirty bowl, Niners vs Lions. I'm going to go fishing in MX. Maggie's family lives in a small sleepy hamlet on a beautiful beach on the Pacific coast of Baja. No license needed to fish from the beach. Cast out and sit on my lawn chair with my cooler of ice with beer next to me. They only have Pacifico down there but that's fine.

It was more a juggle by Higbee than a bad ball by Stafford that prevented Higbee from protecting himself from a legal hit.

The injury looks so bad i wonder if Higbee will retire. I know we just signed him to an extension but no way can we go into next season with the expectation that he will be the starter.

Nope - I expect Higbee to be out until December at the earliest because that looked like a terrible injury to me.

Edit - with that in mind, I expect the Rams to go after a blocking TE in FA or the Draft.

I think Allen will be a pretty good replacement for Higbee.

Somehow there are 2 threads on this subject. But I agree on the dirty hit to the knees. Totally unacceptable. It's all out there for the NFL to see with the same player taking out 2 TE's. Heavy fines and rule changes? You should still be able to tackle low, just no diving into the knees like that .... intentional or not. If they gotta dive, how about lower... like say trip the guy up? Or better yet, learn how to tackle. Eyes on the prize, the belt buckle/waistband.
