Tyler HigbeeUndergoes surgery

General manager Les Snead said Wednesday that Higbee (knee - ACL) has undergone surgery and a timetable for his return is still uncertain, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Higbee suffered a torn right ACL and MCL during the Rams' wild-card playoff loss to the Lions on Jan. 14, after taking a low hit on the offense's final drive. The timing of his injury puts his status for the Week 1 of the 2024 season in serious doubt, and likewise makes him an unlikely candidate to be cleared for the start of training camp late July. Behind the 31-year-old veteran, Davis Allen, Hunter Long (knee) and Brycen Hopkins now all look like candidates to begin the 2024 campaign handling larger roles.

Heal fast big man!

This is why I think tight end is one of our biggest needs in this year's draft.

I do not think a TE could ever be the biggest need for any team. Let alone ours.
If you have a great TE its a nice thing to have. Just not required.
I bet that rookie we had, now 2nd year guy will be a fine player.

We'll need to get one for depth because we probably will be with only Allen and Long. Some pretty decent guys will probably be there in the 5th.

Allen looks like a potential stud in the passing game. In the blocking and other intricacies that McVay requires of his TEs and WRs is to be seen. It looked like he did ok in that regards but hard to tell from the limited time. I'm optimistic by what he showed last year though.

It's why Higbee has stayed for as long as he has because he understands what McVay wants of him beyond just catching the ball. McVay values consistency and being in the exact spot he wants you in over most other things. His entire offense revolves around it. It's why Brycen Hopkins has been MIA for 4 years. The guy shows he has good receiving skills but when called upon to execute a game plan and not just run routes he has consistently fallen short.

Going to be some legit talented TE’s available in the 4-6 rounds. I’d be shocked if we didn’t grab one of them.

Higher isn’t going anywhere with his contract and no team will trade for a guy coming back late off an acl injury. Need a legit TE2 for the coming season.

Davis Allen will be fine if he needs to fill in for Higbee. I think Allen will be very good this upcoming season.
I liked that pick a lot after seeing him get his one pre-season start. Seems athletic enough, good hands, goes get the ball and he seemed to be able to block well enough.

I like Davis Allen too but the Rams still need to address Tight End. It’s probably the most thin position on the entire roster.

Higbee is likely to open the season on PUP.
Long finished the year on IR, and has rarely been healthy in three seasons. Plus, there’s $1.3M of cap relief, with no Dead-$ if he is released.
Hopkins is a free agent.

I think @OldSchool is the current healthy backup-TE.

Get healed up Higs. Still pissed about that hit.

Yeah a stout blocker would be ideal to come in and work with Allen. Well Bowers would be ideal but that ain't gonna happen. I'm thinking something like the Iowa kid.

I'd definitely kick the tires on Jonnu Smith, who was just released. Think he balled out a bit last year and looked better then Pitts at times.

With Davis Allen around at least the Rams do not need to invest big in Free agency. I have always been a fan of Higbee but his time with the Rams may be near its end. IMO the FA bargain route is the best option for adding some vet depth to the TE room. They did a good job last year of back filling the roster with bargain vet FA's.

We're screwed, no blue font needed.

I appreciate everything Higbee has done for and with the Rams but now’s the perfect time to execute his succession plan. Allen and either a draft pick or FA (Hunter Henry?) do the trick.

Henry is only a year older iirc and I think has been injured more.
