The guy is a superb passer, reads defenses nicely, and knows where to go with the ball.

He has been really good at everything except using his legs to escape the pressure. In many cases I think its because his focus downfield blinds him to where the pressure is.

I see it too often...3 times in the Lions game, where he clearly was too focused downfield and simply didn't feel the pressure.

I hope McVay is going over this with him...AND...that Goff himself sees this on tape.

We know he has very good mobility... but as I see it, he doesn't use it enough...and I think he's gonna need it against the Bears!

Funny I thought he was great in the pocket and feeling the pressure. Every QB has plays were a sack happens fast or they don’t feel it coming. One of his better attributes is standing tall in the pocket in the face of pressure to complete a passs.

I think he is fine in the dept. A LOT better than what we have had in the past. At times it has been like he had eyes in the back of his head, other times not so much. Human.

He just needs to throw the ball away more consistently in those situations. And he also needs to work on securing the ball when protections fall apart.

Totally agree.
I think his ability to stay in the pocket is part of what makes him so great.
Like you said, every QB gets sacked.
I love that he stands in there looking to make the throw vs flushing out quickly

I think it's a double edged sword. If he focuses to much on the pressure he could become skidish and rattled. I like that he has so much confidence in the pocket, and that rushes don't affect his throws.

It's a team sport. His lineman could have shouted "run, run, run" when the protection is busted. Why don't the coaches tell that to the OL?

I agree...I also think that his fumble rate per drop back is no higher than most any other QB in the league...Of course I don't know how to cross reference that...Every QB gets strip-sacked from time to time...

I agree OldSchool, he is aware in the pocket he just stands in to deliver and doesn't check down after 2 seconds.

I've mentioned in that way he reminds me of Warner.

I'll admit to saying "throw it!!!!!" a handful of times LOL. But most of the time he is getting big plays out of that. He takes FULL advantage of the protection and lets his guys work open.

As far as fumbles I just took a quick look at the top 10 QB's by yards. I'm using their initials only to save time.

Threads like this make me giggle. I think Goff feels pressure quite well. He isn't Tom Brady or Rodgers but those guys have years of experience on him. Goff is mobile enough and uses it when he needs to. Look at Rodgers and Wentz's they tend to run with the ball and suffer alot of Injuries. Tom Brady just hit a 1000 yards rushing this year he also has stayed reletavely healthy. I want Goff to be Brady, Manning not Rodgers.

His pocket presence is fine in my book. His problem is he's always trying to scrap out another second to make a play. And he's been giving up alot of soft fumbles away lately. Just two hand the ball and go down.

Marino had 87 yards in his 17 year career. 10 times he had negative yardage in a season!

Talk about staying in the pocket!

I think he is pretty damned good but at times instead of throwing it away or running and sliding he holds onto it. He can't be perfect since it's easy to criticize tape and not be the one in that moment but he can work on getting as close to it as possible.

One thing you do have to realize the vantage point on the field from his eyes is totally different than watching it at an elevated position from the side as you do on TV which makes it seem obvious to do stuff.

Goff is top 5 in the league at navigating the pocket. It's play design, and it's with intent - it takes time to develop plays downfield.

Lucky for us, Goff is not a pussy and will stand in there like he needs to. He makes all kinds of subtle movements to avoid pressure.

I think Goff has the makings to be great but yes I heard on nfl network that Goff completes 43% of his passes when pressured which is near the bottom or bottom of the league.

I did find this - from last year (you can read what they say about Goff specifically).

So I'd say there is evidence to support the OP's perspectives.

But he is young so it's reasonable to assume he is only going to improve from here on out.
