thinking of getting one of these gadgets but dont know jack shite about them

any thoughts appreciated
 
Got Roku a few months back and love it. Very user friendly (especially if you're an old guy - IIRC, you just turned 50). :shades:

I have a chromecast and love it - the older one that is like $25...not as user friendly as others may be, but works great and the easy plug in and size means i can move it around when needed.


What are you planning to use it for, that might help with advice?

Basically just to watch TV and save some money on cable bill.

Going to install an HD screens to pick up local stations over the air. If that works then canceling cable and we'll be going the streaming route.

Pretty sure HBO subscription is included in all three gadgets, correct?
 
What's your phone?

That has an impact on choice, for me.

Well; if it were an IPhone and iPad... I'd say Apple TV. They've done a really nice job marrying those products.

Chromecast gets great reviews and would seem to be a good choice based on your phone and tablet.
 
I never had much luck with Chromecast.

There was a lag to the stream. Especially had problems with NetFlix. with it. It would buffer for days. I just use my Playstation 3 for Netflix now and no problem.
 
I can tell you I have galaxy S5 and it works really well with the chromecast. Buffering is really fast, and it casts in high quality to my 60 from the streams i send. Mostly use it for Twitch streams...not sure if relevant.

Another roku user here. I mainly watch netflix with it and it works great.

With Chromecast and the Amazon one, you can install an app to control the device. The Amazon stick one is the only one that comes with it's own dedicated remote. I only know someone with a Chromecast, and you basically touch an icon on apps you have on your phone and it sends it to the TV. It doesn't tie up your phone when you do this either.

Thanks .. it seems Roku comes with a remote now also, but Chromecast doesnt.

Think I am going to try the Firestick since I am already a Prime member with Amazon. First going to try a good HD antenna to get local stations over the air

Ah, so it does... Good choice, since you have Prime. They are available at your local Best Buy too. I've had good luck with one of those flat HD antennas that look like a laminated piece of poster board. I think it's made by Mohu, but a lot of manufacturers seem to have jumped on that design these days.
 
just realized I don't need anything. The 2nd TV in the bedroom is a smart tv with netflix etc loaded in already, and I can hook the laptop up to the LR TV for Amazon Prime movies etc or even Netflix

I was about to say, I liked the Roku, then I got a Samsung smart tv. Now I don't miss the Roku at all.

Agree - I have an iPhone and an AppleTV. Ridiculously easy to connect and set up, about the only thing they could have done to make it easier is to provide a set of arms to plug it in.
