Knee surgery for Dominique Easley means Rams must again revisit options at linebacker

THOUSAND OAKS – The three-game experiment as an outside linebacker has ended for the Rams’ Dominique Easley, in an awful but somewhat predictable way, with another serious knee injury.

Easley underwent surgery for the fourth time in seven years and likely will go on the injured-reserve list and miss the rest of this season. A defensive end by trade, Easley moved to a stand-up position last month with the hope that his knees would take less of a beating and that his pass-rush skills would translate.

“This poor guy,” Coach Sean McVay said before Monday’s practice at Cal Lutheran. “I couldn’t be more impressed with his toughness, how resilient he has been, fighting through so many things with this knee. It’s upsetting because of how many things he’s had to go through and what a great job he’s done.”

In total, the Rams offered positive injury news Monday. Kicker Greg Zuerlein (groin), linebacker Mark Barron (Achilles) and returner JoJo Natson (hand) all have a chance to return for Sunday’s game at Seattle, McVay said, but the loss of Easley is a difficult one, both from on-field and emotional standpoints.

“I feel terrible for him,” said linebacker Matt Longacre, Easley’s likely replacement. “My heart goes out to him. I hope he has a quick recovery.”

Easley, 26, had surgery Monday morning to repair the meniscus in his left knee. Last August, Easley tore the ACL and LCL in his right knee. Easley also underwent two surgeries at the University of Florida, in 2011 to repair his left ACL and in 2013 to repair his right ACL and meniscus.

Rams lose LB Easley to another knee injury

Los Angeles Rams: Coach Sean McVay said outside linebacker Dominique Easley underwent knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus Monday morning and likely will land on the injured reserve list. With a history of serious knee issues, Easley was injured Week 3 against the Chargers. He was on the inactive list Thursday night against the Vikings. “It’s tough. You feel for him,” McVay said. This was the fourth major knee injury since 2011 for Easley, who moved from defensive line to linebacker in the offseason to limit strain on his knees. In other injury news, McVay said the Rams could have kicker Greg Zuerlein back as early as this week after missing two weeks with a groin injury.

I feel really bad for him. Hopefully he's saved his money, looks like his knees just aren't up to it, I'd urge him to retire before heeds up in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He's still young enough to have a decent life.

wow so not the same knee from last year but he's had major injuries to both. Feel so bad for him.

It's only cartilage damage. He will be up and around in a few weeks. However, with the damage he has sustained previously, it might be time to shut him down for good.

MCL tear:( Would appear to be a sure IR list material now. Easley will be a UFA when the season is completed. Rams tooks a super chance on him this season & as we see it went south. Two back to back seasons with knee surgeries.....well its looking real bad for his NFL future.

Rams have invested in this OLB'er unit with draft selections with Ebukam, Franklin-Myers, Okoronkwo, Young & Lawler so we have the numbers but none have yet shown to be the needed pass rusher. They are all under development. Both Easley & Fox brought some experience to this unit but both tore up their knee's. We aslo had veteran Ryan Davis but he injured his ankle & is now on the IR too.

That's a relief. MCL and his career was definitely done.
Not really sure how much torn meniscus repair has been done to that knee or the past severity. Normal knee not having major damage to them can come back to play later but both his knees have been badly damaged with some grade 3 tears in his past along with his MCL/ACL/PCLsurgeries. I guess in this case we will never know the amount of damage he did to the two C-shaped discs of cartilage or (soft tissue) in that knee. Rams Org called the surgery ....Major.

Unfortunately moving Easley to OLB was probably an indication of last option for him on the Rams. It’s a tough business but it’s next man up. I still believe the Rams should bring in a get to help until the youngsters get acclimated. Not sure if that would require a trade or a pickup but think it’s a glaring need.

That should read “bring in a vet”
