Or should we continue to use tight-ends to play double-duty? Personally, I'd like to see an Ironhead back there again, paving the way. Or a Hedgecock. Or a John "The Terminator" Connor. That way we can play ACE formations with one wideout, or one TE and two receivers, or 3 wide without leaving the QB without protection. MOAR BLOCKS PLZ.

Pros? Cons? Thoughts?

Are you hating on Schotty again?

Harkey does well, IMO. But even with a true fullback, how many of them can you get away with just steamrolling behind? Perhaps in short yardage?

Anyone know how many teams utilize a FB?

I'm not sure what good it would really do. Harkey is plenty good at what he does. And if we need pass protection, Kendricks is actually pretty good if you line him up on the LOS.

I'm certainly not opposed to one. I like Jalston Fowler but I wouldn't spend more than a 7th on a FB.

I like Harkey, he seems to fill that roll pretty well and brings more flexibility. I'm not sure we need 5 TEs on the roster but someone needs to fill the ST roles too. If you get a true blocking FB can he do anything else? Can he do any better than Harkey?
 
I think Harkey's fine. The problem right now is Wells/Joseph in the interior, as well as him and Saffold not being 100% along with Wells re:the run game.

I've actually wondered this before. I've actually wondered what would happen if we ran an ol' Flexbone Formation. Today's teams are built for the pass not a crazy unpredictable run. Think about it: Stacy as the FB, Austin as a WingBack, Mason as SB, and have Quick and Britt lined up outside. Where does the ball go? Up the middle? Crazy run? Mason Screen Pass?


You could also use a true FB in there if you would like to run the Wishbone formation too.

Just my thoughts.
 
I would like to go after Marcell Reese. He's been the best all around FB in the NFL the last few years.

I think we could use one, yeah. Now that you mention it, I'd like to pick up Kuhn in free agency. If not though, Harkey is doing fine and we'll just resign him. The offensive line is more the problem than the lead blocker.

Yes it would make a huge difference. Harkey is okay as a duel threat but not really a devastating blocker as a FB.
 
Yes but Schotty will find a way to to utilize him.
 
I've been hoping for a couple years ever since the "our identity is now running the ball" declaration that the Rams would get a true blocking back. I consider it a vital ingredient to a smash mouth running game. Thankfully Harkey has done well growing into the role, but the Rams need more.

The problem is when Harkey moves into the backfield, the Rams have no great inline blocking TE. Kendricks is an inconsistent blocker and Cook, well, heh. So I would like to see the Rams add a true FB or a blocking TE. But it seems Bayer is being groomed to take over for Kendricks who will likely leave as a free agent, and Bayer is not even as good of blocker as Kendricks. Otherwise I imagine that the Rams will once again flirt with Mason Brodine and hybrid types.

I thought Kadeem Jones could stick but his injuries obviously erased that and the Rams just didn't seem to think the role important. I get that with limited roster space you need multi-taskers so the key would be finding that FB that can catch and add to special teams, but the Rams really need to take this last step to fully commit to power running. Schotty finally learned how to do a jumbo formation a couple years too late, hopefully they will rethink here, too. And to stop pulling guards on 4th and inches.

I'm with the fans that think Harkey is fine back there.

In fact, I really like Harkey... love his versatility!
 
I really liked Trey Millard out of Oklahoma before the draft.....but the Whiners redshirted him. I actually think he was the original choice for Michael Sam's spot., as he (Fisher) "started thinking about drafting him a few picks before....." (Where the Whiners drafted Millard......)

Yeah, I do too. He's a solid pass blocker, solid run blocker, and has decent hands. I'm just wondering if we couldn't use a dominant fullback for pass protection and run blocking instead. You know, a game-changer instead of a solid utility player. And I only wonder about that because of the issues we constantly bring up about pass protection and the commitment to the run game.

I love those kind of guys. Moose, Lorenzo Neal, Hedgecock, etc . . . but Harkey is that guy for us and he can catch . . .but I see no reason not to have a 265 pound anvil on the roster. I wanted to draft Prousch out of Auburn, but we had other needs . . . oh well.
