5 Rams players who must step up in the final 5 games
By: Cameron DaSilva

The Los Angeles Rams have entered the final stretch before the postseason, facing a fairly easy five-game finish to the year. They’ll play the Lions on Sunday before taking on the Bears in Chicago the following week. A Sunday night showdown with the Eagles at home comes in Week 14, followed by the Cardinals and 49ers in the final two weeks.

The Rams have all but locked up a playoff berth and the NFC West, but they can’t get complacent in the last five weeks. They need to continue playing at a high level and have some of their other players step up in a big way.

These five come to mind in that regard with all of them needing to play well down the stretch.

CB Marcus Peters
Aqib Talib is set to return soon, possibly as early as Sunday against the Lions, which should help everyone in the secondary. Peters stands to benefit the most from Talib’s return, taking pressure off him to be the No. 1 cornerback and cover the top receiver on the opposing team. Peters has had an up-and-down season in 2018 with most of the downs coming since Week 3 when Talib went down.

If Peters can get back to the way he was playing in the first two games, the Rams will be in great shape moving forward. Both he and Talib were nearly impossible to pass against, providing lockdown coverage on the outside. Even if Peters doesn’t get to that level of play, he simply has to be better than he was in recent weeks.

LB Mark Barron
Barron took a while to get on the field this year after recovering from an Achilles injury suffered last season, but he still doesn’t look like the same player he once was. He’s PFF’s 75th-ranked linebacker with a grade of 44.8, missing tackles on a weekly basis. He also hasn’t provided much in the way of coverage, either, which should be his forte as a former safety.

The Rams won’t bench Barron or go back to Ramik Wilson, who actually played relatively well as a starter earlier this season. They’ll ride it out with the veteran linebacker and hope he turns it around in the final five weeks. It may not be the best approach, but the Rams don’t exactly have many better options.

NT Ndamukong Suh
It’s not that Suh has been bad this season, but in the past six weeks, he just hasn’t had a huge impact. Yes, he was great against the Seahawks with nine tackles, three quarterback hits and a half-sack, but excluding that game, he has nine tackles, two quarterback hits, no sacks and no tackles for loss in his last six starts.

Suh hasn’t recorded a tackle for loss since Week 5, which is also the last time he’s had a full sack. The Rams’ defense has been gashed on the ground and while you can’t pin that on one player, Suh is supposed to be that anchor in the middle making stops at or behind the line of scrimmage. He simply hasn’t done that enough in the past six games. He’s PFF’s 27th-ranks interior defender this season.

WR Josh Reynolds
Reynolds played 98 percent of the snaps against Kansas City in Week 11 and had a terrific game, but it was a small sample size. While the Rams don’t need him to be Cooper Kupp or post 80 yards per game, he does have to be a reliable target for Jared Goff. He can’t drop passes or make mental errors that young players sometimes do.

Goff has shown plenty of confidence in the second-year receiver, targeting him eight times in the Rams’ biggest game of the season. Having Reynolds as a red zone weapon and a guy who can prevent teams from doubling Brandin Cooks and Robert Woods is valuable, which is why he needs to continue playing at a high, starting-caliber level.

S Lamarcus Joyner
Joyner isn’t having a terrible season, but he’s far from the player he was last year. As PFF’s 32nd-ranked safety in 2018, Joyner has been weak in run support and had his lapses in coverage. He’s taken poor angles on ball carries and allowed big gains by missing tackles, but hopefully last week’s win over the Chiefs is a sign of things to come.

He had seven tackles, two passes defensed and a game-sealing interception, showing flashes of how he played last season. The play of L.A.’s secondary as a whole has been shaky, but having that dynamic centerfielder in the middle makes a huge difference. That’s what Joyner has to be for the Rams down the stretch, taking away those big plays downfield.

I'll have to look closer at Barron this week. If he is playing that bad maybe Wilson should get more playing time.

I'm really surprised at the year he's had so far, seeing how he's auditioning for a big contract as a free agent in the upcoming offseason. He hasn't exactly been helping his own cause.

If you do you might need to have a 70 plus inch wide screen ultra high definition with freeze frame ability to locate Mark Barron right after the ball is snapped. Just look for him about 5 yds to the right of Cory Littleton.

Barron has been real quick this season to perform his most used skill in 2018...whiffing in his attempts to make a tackle. He has never been quicker to whiff. You also have to use the remote & go frame by frame to get a good picture of his well worked out perfectly whiffs. MB has mastered the whiff tackle better any other Ram defensive player since DB's Tye Hill, Jonathan Wade & CB Justin King.

Barron has also sharpened his ability to ensure he is blocked solid so to stay out of the way whenever the football is headed his way. On passing plays he is using the well known long distance trail position behind the receiver.

I would add Whitworth to that list . He looks tired to me .

Good point. Haven't seen anyone else here mention that. Noteboom better be ready for next season.

I would remove Reynolds from that list and insert Pharaoh Cooper. It sure would help to have him back to playing at the same level he was last season.

He certainly won't see a big contract in L.A...That ship has sailed after 11 games of mediocracy

Marcus Peters - With Talib back it should take some pressure off of Peters. And history has proven that Peters is a top CB so he'll hopefully start playing like one.

Mark Barron - Isn't good, so don t expect much from him and you'll be happy.

Ndamukong Suh - Going down hill. Kerplunk!

Josh Reynolds - He's good! He's finally able to display his talent, and he's showing us all that he is a starting caliber player as McVay keeps telling us.

Lamarcus Joyner - He might also benefit by Talib's return. But he really has been a disappointment, and most likely one of the secondary not returning next year.

Andrew Whitworth - He will probably benefit the most by having a bye week. But even so, he still been better than most LTs this year, so don't be crying in your tea over Andrew. But it is nice Noteboom is available to start next year, you know, just in case.

Overall even with our weaknesses, we have a DAMN FINE TEAM!

Reynolds is stepping up, Everett/Higbee can be added, along with Brockers, who had been quiet also, the rest of the original list is good. Those guys need to play better.

Players that can help major in the second half, Fowler Jr., Ebukam, and Talib.

Didn't that appear to happen towards the end of the year last year also?

It did, if I am recalling correctly. I'm not concerned about big Whit though. At least not for this year. He's as stud and definitely appears to still have some gas left in the tank. In the meantime, fingers crossed we keep coaching Noteboom up, so that he is ready to take over when Whitworth starts to decline.

Williams is sure to desire his old Nickle.....so LJ off to Cleveland Browns Land.
I was thinking him and Barron that would make that Cleveland defense nasty though with the guys they already got

Ok, so once we clinche the division perhaps we start to sprinkle in some Noteboom! Give big Whit a rest and game time action for the youngster! If he’s deemed ready. Hate to see Goff get injured.

I didn't look at film extensively, but the number of looks I took, showed that Joyner was just indecisive. He hesitates and winds up late to the middle or the outside. Just take your best shot and take away one of the receivers instead of none. That's my observation of Joyner this season.

That and I think we need 4 D Lineman because our LB corps is not cutting it. It will help the run defense and pass rush. You need some exceptional LBs to play a 3-4. Playing 3-4 allowed Donald to be double teamed 70% of the time and he still has 14.5 sacks. Imagine if we have sme bigger bodies up front to relieve Donald of the double teams.

my observation of joyner is him diving over wrs and rbs already tackled. he puts his shoulder out front then dives straight over them. always too little, too late.
